In the Contrasts series, Benromach always presents special maturations that either contrast with each other or with the regular bottlings. Benromach is normally a peated whisky – this one is called Contrasts: Unpeated. The whisky is 9 years old and matured in sherry and bourbon casks.

    • Nose
Even without smoke, Benromach has a burnt, roasted character on the nose, along with bright, stewed fruits and yellow wine gums. The whole thing is rather fresh, with perhaps a small squeeze of lime. And somehow, I still always have a hint of smoke, at least subliminally resonating. Perhaps as a memory or secret information.
    • Taste
At 46% ABV, the whisky is quite drinkable. The strength is absolutely fine for the alcohol – the aromas could perhaps be a bit higher. The fruits are rather light, with pear compote again, and a hint of white peach. Added to that are the rather spicy notes of wood and a few spices, as well as a hint of funk, which doesn't manifest itself as smoke in the taste, as it does in the nose. There's little vanilla, and there's also little caramel.
    • Finish
The whisky doesn't become truly dry, but it's not particularly persistent either. On the palate, a hint of wood lingers, but the fruit disappears rather quickly.

A nice whisky, but overall a bit too thin for me. It could use more structure and body; the almost 10 years are perhaps still a bit too young. That's a shame, because overall the approach is good, and Benromach offers enough individuality and funk to work even without direct smoke.
