‘Iconic Speyside Distillery 2011’, 13 Year Old, Cask 2944099, Duncan Taylor The Octave, SMSW, 54.2%.

30ml sample from a The Spirits Embassy Christmas cracker.

    Very dark amber.

Aroma is deep apple juice reduction – more of a calvados nose than a whisky one. Spent black tea leaves in a big way. Mince pie – why not, I’ll throw that in as a tasting note since it’s Christmas. Violets for sure, musty crushed violet petals or simply parma violet sweets.

    Body is lightly oily.

Taste is initially strong black tea, salty spirit, plum. Unsweetened dark fruit jam. Dense on the palate to start and then just evaporates away on the finish. Certainly a bit empty on the finish. I am difficult to please when it comes to cask influence but for me this is way over the top. 3.25/78

With 5ml of water we’re down to the mid 40s. I probably should have added less to start. Aroma loses a lot. Faint browned apple, chewed pencil / paper, nutmeg. Body is watery. Taste is soft and ‘juicy’, very easy-going now, plummy. Again the finish is flat and now that I’ve added water this one comes across as flabby and wishy-washy. But it’s drinking very easily and the flavour is pretty clean. Papery oak and chewed pencil / over brewed tea notes become a little annoying.

Given the overpowering cask, guessing a distillery here would be like throwing a dart at a map of Speyside (at least with my throwing skills). But with the total lack of a finish, I’d be minded to take a guess at Glenfiddich. 3.1/74
