  1. glen efze scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

A 17-year-old Highland Park bottled in the Connoisseurs Choice series by Gordon & MacPhail. The whisky comes from a refill Sherry Puncheon and has a medium-dark gold hue. As of mid-2025, the whisky is available in a few German online shops for between €170 and €180. 60.3% ABV is a respectable statement after 17 years in cask and indicates that the whisky was bottled at a very high alcohol content.

    • Nose
On the nose, there's a tart fruity note with a hint of unripe pear; the smoke is only slightly noticeable. The alcohol is quite noticeable, with a slightly sharp note on the nose. Wood is clearly noticeable, and with the smoke, it also creates dry cocoa aromas. On the nose, the whisky is quite tart and somewhat harsh. With water, it softens somewhat and becomes a bit more approachable.
    • Taste
Despite a few drops of water, the whisky is quite sharp and inaccessible in the mouth. It definitely needs another splash of water. The aromas remain relatively subdued, with the wood being the most noticeable, and the smoke remaining in the background. Some cocoa and caramel flash briefly, but disappear relatively quickly. With time and water, the aromas become more persistent, and caramel and malt develop.
    • Finish
The aftertaste leaves a woody note in the mouth, which is rather dry.

Overall, I find the whisky lacks longevity and depth. It's a rather harsh whisky; perhaps the Puncheon was more of a third fill and didn't have much left to offer. However, the wood isn't too worn out or bitter. Nevertheless, given the age and price, I would expect a bit more.
