This PE is like Jekyll and Hyde ... The nose is extremely inviting and friendly, but the taste is somber and tries to draw me to the dark side. But this mysterious combination makes Port Ellen so interesting and appealing to me. In the nose, the PE is incredibly complex and varied. Dark fruits, leather, sweet tobacco, cold smoke, peat and many maritime influences let me stand for a moment on a jetty on the stormy sea and look longingly at the foaming sea. Taste then the stark opposite. Dark and dark, oily and moldy, salty, sometimes hot and then again the association with dark and oily furniture polish. I am standing in the deep dark forest and surrounded by mysterious clouds of fog ... This sample was a totally new experience for me and definitely worth a second glass. A great and mystical drop!
    • Nose
Dark and mysterious, Port Ellen shimmers in the glass. On the glass wall, a syrup-like streak has formed from which relatively quickly dissolve long and oily drops and pull their paths back into the glass. Timid and very lovely Islay aroma rises from the glass, fine smoky peat rises majestically. A hint of musty and wet wooden plank penetrates the slowly fruity peat, mineral notes follow, while a calm sea breeze blows across. Slowly the PE opens and the nose releases dark fruit flavors. Olives and creamy cherries and blackberries rise in the nose, old and yet sweet oranges and a hint of apricot give the nose now a beguiling aroma. A touch of leather and sweet, dried tobacco leaves come into their own, cold coffee mixes with a delicious milk chocolate and bittersweet chocolate blend. A cold, sweetly fruity smoke aroma unites with the dark and old berries. A wonderful peat scent is in the foreground during the entire nosing dominant. Gorgeous, I could smell for hours on this dreamlike sample ...
    • Taste
A mixture of mineral peat and cold smoke dominates the first impression. Sweet elements flash shortly before tart and dark wood tones make the taste appear relatively dark and melancholy. A pinch of salt and a hint of pepper lie warming over the tongue, dark wood and earth tones rest on the palate. Oily and bitter herbaceous the first sip reminds a little of furniture polish and floor wax. Liquorice mixes with the heavy and dark aroma, again comes to me a musty and eaten by the surf wooden plank in mind. Dried berries and dark walnuts pull me out of my thoughts ... The next sip reflects the dark and gloomy impressions of the first sip. Pepper and salt exude their slightly pungent aroma, dark and dried berries fall on the moldy soil, crumbs of decaying wood lie next to it and exude their intense aroma. The salty and pleasantly sharp wood aroma increases, a hint of burnt rubber and greasy oil sticks to the palate, followed by cold smoke and a little mineral peat.
    • Finish
With these harsh and dark aromas, the Port Ellen goes into the finish. A slightly salty layer still sticks to the tongue and exudes a maritime flavor. The thought of furniture polish does not let me go in the finish. Dark and old wood elements gradually merge with walnuts and dark, dried berries and grapes. The wet and bitter wood exudes its incredible fragrance for a long time and gives the impression that the finish never ends.
