  1. glen efze scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Balmenach is a rather rare whisky. This Thompson Brothers bottling is somewhat mysterious. It was cask aged in 2013 and bottled in 2024, yet the label only states it was aged nine years. It states that the whisky matured in a sherry hogshead, which left a beautiful golden color.

    • Nose
Balmenach has worm tubs, which often results in a somewhat rougher whisky with umami notes. These are somehow noticeable on the nose here. But there are also berry fruit notes, slightly fermented. There's also forest honey, along with tea biscuits and a hint of yeast spread. The alcohol is well integrated on the nose.
    • Taste
In the mouth, the whisky could use a few drops of water to better tame the alcohol. It offers oak tones that transition into caramel and malt. The yeast spread now has plenty of Ovaltine. There are also cherry drops and a bit of plum jam. The whisky seems older than 9 years, but its youth is more evident in the still somewhat wild alcohol in the mouth. There's also a slight funk, which could be a latent sulfurous note, but it still fits well here.
    • Finish
The aftertaste leaves fruity aromas with hints of plum, cocoa and malt on the palate.

A richly aromatic whisky with distinct wood and spicy notes. The aromas aren't young, but their interplay remains rather wild with a touch of roughness. This makes the whisky interesting. It's by no means a mainstream whisky, and it needs some time. It's not a sophisticated sherry whisky, but it's a good and interesting sherry whisky that showcases the worm tub character well.
