  1. plutoes scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

A distinctive and instructive dram that challenges expectations of long-aged bourbon cask maturation.
Rather than brightness and freshness, it delivers a dark, damp, rancio-leaning profile with thick maltiness and cooked fruits throughout.
Not a personal favorite profile, but undeniably characterful and memorable.
    • Nose
      87 87
Low alcohol prickle with moderately high volume, though it takes some time for the aromas to fully open up.
Wildflower and manuka honey lead, followed by steamed barley, oyster mushrooms, sawdust, and woody notes suggestive of damp, wet wood—overall rather earthy and subdued in tone.
Heavily cooked fruit aromas dominate: pan-cooked pear, roasted red apple, and stewed citrus, with a touch of yellow peach.
Custard cream appears, but only softly.
Despite feeling like a first-fill bourbon cask, the whisky conveys an unexpectedly dark, humid, mushroomy rancio character—as if matured in a particularly damp warehouse (possibly a dunnage).
This is not a profile commonly encountered in bourbon casks, making it slightly perplexing yet all the more intriguing.
    • Taste
      87 87
Medium-to-heavy body, leaning toward the heavier side, with a slightly prickly and mildly sticky texture.
The palate closely mirrors the nose, opening with an abundance of cooked fruits—red apple, orange, and pear.
From the mid-palate onward, earthy and heavy notes rise: steamed barley, mushrooms, wet wood, and malt syrup.
There is some acidity from underripe orange, though it feels partially suppressed by the heavier, duller flavors.
Toward the back end, maltiness intensifies, accompanied by a pecan-like nuttiness.
As on the nose, the impression is of a first-fill bourbon cask matured in a dark, damp environment.
Unlike the bright, fresh character often expected from long-aged bourbon casks, this whisky is distinctly malty, dominated by cooked fruits, and overall quite dark and humid in character.
While not a personal preference, the thick body and densely packed flavors—albeit somewhat muted in tone—are appreciable.
    • Finish
      88 88
High intensity with a long finish.
Retro-nasally, roasted barley, honey, and stewed pear dominate, followed by cooked citrus, eraser-like rubber notes, oyster mushrooms, roasted Fuji apple, and a lingering hint of wet wood.
On the palate, steamed barley, cooked orange, and stewed pear lead, supported by malt syrup, wildflower honey, pine and oyster mushrooms, with wet wood continuing to echo through the finish.
