    Evolution

Sit down for this one, it's a long intro…

Element, from a company called New Era Spirits, is a new Irish whisky (purchased from Teeling's father, The Great Northern Distillery) that is being developed, if you will, through open innovation. How does this process work at Element Whisky? They operate according to five distinct phases. First, there's the Test phase, in which various whiskies are tasted, assessed, and scored based on specific criteria by their "panel." This panel consists of a diverse group, including bartenders, industry experts, whisky associations, and consumers. This mix of perspectives and expertise allows for a broad evaluation process, enriched by the insights of professionals and enthusiasts. Feedback from consumers and experts then determines which whiskies fit into their portfolio. Next comes the Develop phase, in which they search for the "best" selected whiskies that match their customers' preferences. In the Identify phase, they actively engage with their audience to implement ideas that improve the whisky process. They also listen carefully in the Listen phase, monitoring trends and tastes to remain flexible. Finally, there's the Release phase, where they bring their matured whisky to market, enriched with insights to meet and even exceed customer expectations. This has happened twice so far: the Fusion Series R/1.0, a blend of Irish whiskys from different grains, different ages, and different casks, and now this release, affectionately known as Lore R/1.0. It's a whisky inspired by traditional Irish whisky and is a single malt, matured in ex-bourbon, Madeira, and sweet muscatel casks.

The nose is surprising. Besides the sweet, fruity notes of mandarin and grapes—enhanced with a touch of honey—I also get an umami note reminiscent of roast beef. However, it doesn't linger and is quickly followed by a hint of lime zest and white chocolate. A lovely evolution.

The body is unfortunately quite light. The citrus fruit immediately returns, complemented by a touch of honey and vanilla, followed by subtle spices. Think pepper, licorice, cloves, and a pinch of spice. It still makes for a lovely malt with a distinctly Irish feel (yikes!). A slightly candy-like note emerges mid-palate, which I attribute to the Madeira and Moscatel casks.

The finish is quite long and slightly spicy, but it's vanilla and citrus that have the last say. It dies a slightly bitter death.

Well, well, I quite like this.

  2. DistiLesha scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

Immature and young. The distillate needed another 10 years in the same barrel. It seems that the master blender is either completely absent or has no experience yet, since he decided to extract an unfinished distillate from a good, working barrel.
As expected, the mash and breadiness evaporate in the air, although they do not go away completely.

The aroma of a fresh loaf of white bread, broken in half. Young notes of apples and pears, butter cream, vanilla and sweet malt, there are unusual hints of copper.

Distinctly fermented, lemon zest and juice, vanilla.
The taste is sweet and sour and fruity with the usual bourbon creaminess.

    • Finish
Duchesse, vanilla and dry oak board, waxed paper

"ELEMENT Lore Single Malt R/1.0 was developed following our Open Innovation model to whisky development. The components of this single malt were decided by the crowd – bartenders, industry experts, whisky societies and consumers. This feedback & input enabled us to develop what we believe is an accessible and smooth whisky that is full of depth and character."

This exceptional Single Malt was crafted from ex-Bourbon, Madeira, and Sweet Moscatel casks, carefully selected to create a smooth, approachable whisky that's full of depth and character.
    • Nose
Obviously you can smell that this is an Irish Whisky. How? Green apples and fresh orchard fruits. Citrus fruits and maltiness. There are hints of raspberry and strawberry. Lovely toasted oak and spices. White grapes and chocolate. A very sweet and inviting nose.
    • Taste
It's very smooth, and drinkable. The taste is "darker" than the nose. The fresh orchard fruits are not so apparent here. You get more of dark fruit note such as fig jam. Strawberry jam. Coffe Latte with lots of cream on top. The maltiness is really powerful here too. I'm getting vanilla, caramelized apricots and toasted oak yet again. Lovely, complex taste.
    • Finish
Medium, but it's almost long. Smooth and tasty. Christmas spices, malted barley, vanilla, toffee, oak and fruits. It's great.
