    Guimauve

I have fond memories of my visit to this Dublin distillery. However, I also remember that the "bottle your own" option was out of service at the time, so that was a bit of a letdown. Anyway. In the glass today is a 13-year-old (so it must be sourced whiskey) single grain at cask strength. Whether we'll see any new releases from this house in the near future remains to be seen. After all, production ceased in early 2025. All the more reason to enjoy this malt as much as possible. It was finished in a heavily charred bourbon barrel – the so-called alligator char.

Oh, this is lovely! Marzipan, quince, white chocolate, guimauve, and Fanta Orange. Intensely sweet and very summery. When I smell guimauve in a whisky—which transports me back to my childhood—I'm always in a good mood.

Deliciously oily. And the taste immediately reveals that this is a single grain, as it displays those characteristic notes of pencil shavings, popcorn, pineapple, and honey, albeit sprinkled with a generous amount of black pepper. And a hint of Velpon, too. This is spicy, indeed.

    The finish is quite long.

A pleasant surprise, I must admit. And what's more, a bottle costs a measly €55. Nice! Thanks, Benny.

PS. Meanwhile, production at Roe & Co has been temporarily halted by owner Diageo due to the difficult economic circumstances.
