[May 2024] This certainly is a Laphroaig...

...and not a bad one. In a direct comparison with the recent 25-year old official release (WB237201) this shows a comparable profile, but it offers a little more in each of the three tasting dimensions. This happens quite often when it comes to a competition between an excellent single cask and a large batch where the most interesting impressions are often levelled out by the other casks.
    • Nose
      91 91
The colour is deep copper, and the nose offers a trademark Laphroaig profile in line with the recent 25-year old official bottlings. Hence it is more straight-forward and less complex than older vintages, but at the same time with a powerful trinity of spirit, peat and wood aromas in a perfectly balanced setting. Actually, I like this nose a little better than the most recent 25-year OB (WB237201), mainly because of its more impressive medicinal notes.
    • Taste
      92 92
The taste is impressive, and of the best modern Laphroaig profile with a better complexity and harmony than WB237201. This dram is a great chewer too, and it offers more impressions and even several different layers this way. Interestingly, the focus of these layers change from bitter-peaty to barley-sweet and back again - which is a very enjoyable rollercoaster ride!
    • Finish
      90 90
The dram arrives warming and coating on my palate with without any distracting moments, hence this is a little better than the 2023 OB too. Still this texture is not as good as that of older vintages, but it is way better than all of the younger releases (by light years). It turns even more phenolic-peaty towards the end, and this is great. There are no flaws or unbalanced impressions throughout the tasting, this is clearly a Laphroaig from the good old times (before they had to rush production processes on command of the Beam management from 2010 onwards). Water is not needed.
