  1. rottendon scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

In Kentucky this bourbon would probably not comply with the rules and would therefore be illegal, but the bottom line is that in my opinion it is the most perfect bourbon that I have ever had in my glass so far. If this requires a lack of compliance with the rules, so be it. There have already been some nice experiments in Kentucky, and in Texas something like this can obviously be done legally, and that's a good thing. What's most amazing is that blindly in my life I wouldn't have thought it was a bourbon.
    • Nose
      90 90
Immediately after pouring, it doesn't feel like a bourbon on the nose, more like a Scotch from a Virgin Oak barrel. It is strongly reminiscent of the Feîs Île bottling from Bunnahabhain, which came from the Virgin Oak back then and then was matured in Virgin Oak, 2018? After a few minutes you can actually notice fruity notes in the direction of cherry? The bottom line is lots of roasted aromas, dark caramel, brown sugar and a hint of menthol in the background. The clearest indication of the port barrel is actually the red tones in the paint.

After a lot of time it appears very round and perfect, soft, the fruit notes are now clearly visible, still mainly cherry but also possibly red currant or berries in general, plus a velvety or creaminess, like butter caramel. The Virgin Oak notes are and will remain in the foreground.

When warmed, the fruit notes are initially significantly increased, but appear rather artificial, strawberry and cherry chewy candy aroma. The creaminess remains, only the virgin oak notes decrease significantly, less caramel and hardly any roasted aromas. Nevertheless, even with hand warmth, it still looks very attractive and well balanced. Very late on you notice a certain fruit acidity for the first time, and the whiskey becomes increasingly creamy and creamier. The fruit flavors also seem less artificial and are more reminiscent of a well-made custard. Coffee notes appear very late. It's so inviting that you can't stop sniffing it. In general, the warmth of his hands is very good for him. It now also gives it the complexity that I initially missed due to my slightly higher expectations.

      93 93
Wow, what a revelation in your mouth. Dense as heavy oil, with a soft but still strong alcohol effect, all the aromas from the nose also come into their own in the mouth. First the virgin oak aromas, then the fruit notes which increase significantly towards the end and also contain fruit acid, and at the end even the European oak can be persuaded to come along with a gentle tannin charge. In the second sip the oak can be found a little further forward, but at no point does it seem bitter. Fabulously balanced, incredibly perfect, I'm impressed. The sequence in which the flavors develop in the mouth is the crowning glory.
    • Finish
      91 91
In the finish, European oak initially dominates, while the fruit notes slowly fade into the background. At the end, the tongue has a slightly buttery coating. There is some warming of the chest area, but it is not as strong as expected. Overall, the finish is surprisingly long and the whiskey remains fondly remembered.
