My first Linlithgow, and I like it!  Too bad it's closed.  I guess I waited too long to get into this distillery.  This one is a hot number with some excellent body.
    • Nose
Sweet.  Confectioner's sugar.  Vanilla syrup.  Wood varnish.  Fresh lemongrass.  Clothes dryer sheets.  Yeasty white bread.  Hard toffee candy.
    • Taste
Firm and drying.  Hot with lots of black pepper and some cardamon.  Lemon peels.  Big oak (not overpowering).  More vanilla, but it's easy to miss.  Eucalyptus.
    • Finish
Hot and medium long.  Black pepper and sea salt.  Almonds and some cut hay.  More eucalyptus.  Gin (sounds weird, I know).

n: lemons, lemon tart, cereals, a hint of honey,  a few flowers, a little vanilla and
just a whiff of oak. a little hay and hints of blue poppy.
an elegant nose,  very fresh and very nice.
t:  quite strong and a little sharp without water although the mouthfeel is rather
smooth. the lemons are a bit sweeter than they were on the nose, the oak is
more spicy here.  with a faint nuttiness and a little vanilla. something floral.
f: medium to long, still on fresh lemons, very clean.

Too much alcohol at first nose. Honey, antique store, the dilution makes up fruit (apple, peach, apricot) and a lot of wax. Mouth very powerful, very sweet with a little lemon, medium on fruits, wax and vegetable. The texture hangs, slightly dusty. Short final. Swim very well, do not hesitate. Typical profile of a lowlander: fruity, a little green and evanescent. This one has character but for the price it is not my profile.

Topper. Reasonably complex whisky. Not for beginners.
    • Nose
Stinging. Citrus on the nose, lime zest and blood orange more specifically. Then some spicy and a touch of mint. Which is also minerally and hints of new spirit. Then some sweets (honey).
    • Taste
Pfoe, that comes in firmly. Pretty powerful. The citrus is less present but there is more spiciness (mint, pepper, liquorice). The clean, subtle smoke ensures a good balance. There is also something floral in the background as well as some chocolate. Man, this is nice stuff.
    • Finish
medium long aftertaste which is somewhat drying with notes of licorice and a fading smoke.

    HWF VBT-5 sample 4.

Except the straw and malt in the nose, I didn't discover many typical Lowlands characteristics in this sample.
    • Nose
A lot of fruit: Apricot jelly (cake filling) pear, fig, apple and pineapple. Whiffs of mint, vanilla and a little caramel from a good bourbon cask. Initially a slight whiff of ammonia, but when that's gone it's replaced by honey, marzipan and even a little beeswax. Eventually also a little malt sugar, hay and smoked ham. Complex nose!
    • Taste
Apricot, pear, fig, vanilla, honey, caramel and spicy oak. Quite strong despite the fruitiness.
    • Finish
Vanilla, peach, rhubarb and a little spice.

HWF VBT-5 sample 4 tasted with Aby
    • Nose
a bit sharp, plums, bees wax, some peat, leather, fudge, citrus - lemon and smoked ham
    • Taste
wax, honey and a lot of citrus - lemon
    • Finish
      spices and citrus - lemon

  15. Bishlouk scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

A very complex and very subtle single malt. It takes a long time to enjoy its many facets, it is to consume at ease, quietly, without hurry. Alcohol is perfectly mastered, the 57.3% never attack. A big whisky.
    • Nose
In the first place lemon syrup, spring flowers, standing cereals. It's very thin and melted. After aeration, the festival begins! Dry straw passes furtively, many cereals, stewed yellow fruits arrive in a rush; then the flowers come back, then the lemon (freshly squeezed this time), then the cereals again. It goes around in circles, a real carousel.
    • Taste
A frank attack on citrus and a hint of acidity. Then apricot compote mixed with muesli. The fresh yellow lemon then takes the ascendant.
    • Finish
White pepper tickles the tongue and cheeks. Dry wheat pods stick to the palate, and lemon syrup covers all that.

Wonderful nose, the alcohol is well integrated and does not attack in any way. It is on grassy and woody notes, a little licorice, sage and other spices in shambles. Green fruit, malted cereal, a mineral touch too. The mouth is not left behind, medium to long and well balanced. We find a small spicy boom in the beginning of mouth and a magnificent malty development on a slight astringency sufficient to trigger some salivation. All extremely well put together, it's fresh, clean and crispy!

Clearly a smoky Linlithgow/ St. Magdalene. Not an easy dram, but very very entertaining.
    • Nose
      roasted cereals, lemon, cigar, terpentine
    • Taste
      smoke, cereals, lemon, liquorice, pepper
    • Finish
      long, pepper, dry

  18. Willie JJ scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

    Hugely intense and great fun.
    • Nose
Initially vegetal, Rose's lime cordial. Spirity, but not very aromatic. Water gives lemon juicy fruit sweeties.
    • Taste
A real burst of sugar laced with lemon and lime juice. Two drops of water and it explodes into a cascade of spices.
    • Finish
Long sugary and spicy with plenty of pepper. Sherbetty and a little hot with water. Peppercorns at the end.
