    Williamson 2015, Bottled 2023, BBR Cask 181, 60.8%.

70cl bottle, consumed at various times in October 2024. I have been playing around with water in this bottling, but discovered that it's at its best at cask strength with at least 15 minutes in the glass. This is my fifth dram after having tried the whisky at differing strengths, and water only dampens this one. Very often the opposite is true, but this one doesn't like water. So the dram in front of me - the 'scoring pour' - is at cask strength.

In short, this is one of the least impressive Laphroaigs I can remember trying, and is an advert for buying their official bottlings instead.

    Mid tone amber.

Aroma is muted, slowly slowly building some orange, burnt wax. The aroma takes at least 15 minutes to come out, by which time it hints at liquorice and smoked fish, but remains light.

Body is watery to a little thinner than that.

Taste is punchy and robust, hints at banana and vanilla in the middle - rounded caramel too with a hint of mint. Fairly acrid into the finish with the softest lingering smoke.

An atypical Laphroaig. Uneventful and overly acrid. The punchy banana fritter and smoke vibes remind me of a poor bottling of Ballantruan.

Okay stuff. I do regret the purchase, it has to be said, and I'd prefer to have the £80 in my pocket. Yet that's considered cheap by today's standards, which is shocking really. That's the risk these days, with all whiskies getting pricier but quality being variable. 3.3/79
