    87-

First impressions are very positive on this one. A bit too expensive in my location (what isn't?), but I don't care when the juice is good.

2nd Glen Scotia I've tried thus far, and this is definitely a close relative of the 15-year old, and unlike any other whisky I've tried from other distilleries.
    • Nose
      87 87
Obviously Campbeltown-y, very similar to the 15, but I prefer to nose this one because: 1) it is good immediately after the bottle has been opened; 2) it is livelier/less muted, and 3) it is a little more cohesive. Graphite and sweet chalk, green leaves and damp wood, malt-chocolate and honey, plenty of fruits too (citrus, green, red, dried, unripe, overripe). The 15 is already a wood toasty, but this one is a bit more. A bit damp as well, however in such a characterful whisky it is a plus for me. You can tell there is both younger (8-10 year-old) and older (15-18 year-old) whisky in this NAS, and on the nose this is clearly balanced, great in-house cask blending. I've read some criticisms regarding excessive oakiness in other batches, but not in this one, IMO, since the distillery's character is so powerful. Respect, Glen Scotia, I like this very much.
    • Taste
      88 88
Gets considerably better with some water (at around 48-50%) and 15+ minutes in the glass. Oily, resinous, the deep charred casks are indeed there but they are not too aggressive and I like that very much. Starts sweet (malt, honey, fruits) and sour (citric, green apple peel), but then it gets quite salty and warm-bitter (bitter oils, leaves, heavy spices). Mineral and maritime, a bit sooty as well. Wonderful resinous caramels that drive the whole experience at a great pace. So unique, so well-paced. Very, very good.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium length, quite pleasant as well but a bit more generic. It starts off sooty following the palate, and we still get the Glen Scotia character coming through, but also some generic whisky aromas that I like but are delivered a bit too weakly for my taste (malt, chocolate, dried fruits, honey). Furthermore, the wood dryness becomes more prevalent here, but still not unbearable by any means. I still like it, but not as much as the nose or palate. Overall, a very good whisky with a well deserved reputation.
