With the knowledge of a First Fill Tawny Port Barriques you can already recognize the red berry/wine-like aromas.
Mmmh, that leaves me conflicted. Not bad, but not wow either. You get something from the Tawny, but hey, I expected more from the first fill Tawny... what a shame.
[86 - 82 = good whisky -> get (second) bottle? Maybe...] nice experience, but sample is enough for me.
    • Nose
dark and red fruit aromas. Fine spice in the background. Slight cellar mustiness, but it goes away quite quickly. There are aromas that you can't really assign, they all blur together...
Grapes and wine aromas are most pronounced, and the wood spice with its tannins, which come from the port and the barrel, also goes well with this. I haven't had Benrinnes that often, so I don't recognize any distillery character, but even so the aromas are quite "washed out" and not really noticeable - but that shouldn't necessarily be interpreted negatively in this case.
Mmmh, over time something of an apricot, blossom honey in the background. Citrus moment (orange?).
Water opens it up a little and more fruit and honey sweetness comes through. With even more water: caramel becomes clearer again, plus roasted almonds.
    • Taste
Relatively soft at the beginning, the punch comes a little delayed - wow, it's sharp on the tongue. Sweet aromas, red fruits, it quickly turns bitter, but then recovers to a dark chocolate with a high cocoa content.
2nd Sip: a few more drops of water: creamy, lots of red/dark fruits, again quite delayed with a lot of buzz on the tongue... woa, it can handle even more water or I can't handle that much today.
Boy, it burns everything in the mouth - there's the "negative" burnout with extreme youthful spiciness, but in this case it's more the "positive" burn of the barrel character with its spice.
    • Finish
Spice, fruit, citrus moment, tannins, wine aromas (that's where the tawny comes through - unfortunately a little too late for my taste).
