I like it very, very much immediately after pouring it - not a matter of course for an 8-year-old whiskey with almost 60 percent.

This is a whiskey that I would very much like to have in my collection as a convincing and well-made youngster, although 100 euros would actually be the limit here.
A solid 88 points for the whole package and the first nose, which really got me excited.

Ham! Immediately I have to think of juicy ham, followed directly by a clearly medicinal iodine note, which is not necessarily as present as with other Laphroaigs due to the sherry influence.

I am constantly amazed at how balanced the alcohol is despite the age - this must have been a very clean distillate.

With water comes a peppery note reminiscent of a Talisker but less sweet overall.

Powerful and smoky attack - clearly a Laphroaig. But this shows again that Laphroaig and Sherry go very well in many cases. In the middle then a bit bitter than the nose and the alcohol is also much more noticeable at the back.

Water makes it - as expected - less rough, without making it really round right away. Again, a light peppery note that doesn't bother you, but doesn't go so well with the first impression.
Also tolerates three additional drops of water on a properly filled 2cl sample.

The finish is salty ham smoke and a glimpse into a disinfected hospital room

    8 year old laphroaig
    • Nose
Soft peat, ash, bacon, subtle smoke, white fruit, subtle vegetal note.
    • Taste
Rich and smooth, then a spicy kick. Honey, subdued peat, ash, spice, saline, mild citrus, white fruit. Oily mouthfeel.
    • Finish
Long with billowing sweet peat and well integrated spice.
