Yeah, it's fun when diluted. Of course, some youth still comes through, but the sherry cask was probably a better one and conceals it well and also brings enough fruit with it.
[91 - 87 = extremely tasty -> it's best if I get a second bottle] If you like Lochlea and are fond of (dry) sherry, you can get it here. Personally, the sample is enough for me, I'd rather wait a few more years; Then something really good could come out of it.
    • Nose
The Oloroso takes the lead here: initially lots of nutty aromas (hazelnut, walnut, Brazil nut), slightly oily. Then red fruits/berries are added.
In addition to the berries also raisins and plums. Very slightly floral/perfumed, but very subtle in the background. Sherry spices/spices/herbs. Honey, caramel for the sweetness, which mainly comes from the fruit.
If you push it too far, the alcohol comes through clearly, but it doesn't bother you.
With water (~55%): With water it opens up, becomes sweeter, more red fruits, more (forest) berries, more honey, more caramel. The alcohol sting goes away. So the water here is really good.
Slight acidity comes into play (berry fruit acidity, young red currant acidity), but the more floral momentum comes into play again - interesting.
Purely from the nosing, I would say that the Oloroso cask has a good influence - that's fun if you like sherry malts.
    • Taste
very spicy at the start, red fruits come through, the dryness is great. Tannins immediately coat the tongue and any saliva is drawn out. Decent sharpness is still there, but it fits. Nutty aromas emerge, slightly floral hints.
2nd Sip: again quite spicy, strong, oily and voluminous on the tongue, more red fruits come through, not quite as sweet as one might have expected from the nosing; But the fruit sweetness still brings something.
Quite dry at the back again.
Diluted to approx. 50%: velvety-fruity, even more fruit flavors from the sherry, more nut flavors, marzipan, dark chocolate (80% men's chocolate).
    • Finish
Tart impact from the sherry spice/oak tannins. Quite dry in the mouth. Leather/tobacco moment. But nut flavors disappear again.
