A wonderful caol ila. Has a nice fresh air nose to it which easily gets you hooked to nose it for a long time. There is not that much impact from the wine in the barrique on the nose/palette.
It can be bitter at times, especially on the finish which could be a challenge to beginners but it adds a nice complexity to it's entirety.
As the bottle goes down this turns into a charcoal barbecue smoky goodness which is an absolutely wonderful full on blast in your face.
    • Nose
Some iodine and earthy peat. It has a sweet nose but also very fresh. Some hemp rope, citrus rind and dill/pickle juice.
After adding water there is a hint of strawberry (likely from the cask), butter cookies. The sweetness turns into a sugar/honey/barley combination. There is some black pepper, moss and some dusty attic. Due to the freshness and the citrus it could sometimes come across as hints of the nose from a can of 7up.
    • Taste
Sweet caramel. Ashy, tar, coal smoke. It's warm and peppery and then you get some red fruit sweetness from the barrique and it funnily enough also has a sparkling water note to it which reminds me of spa red. All in all a very nice combination of flavors.
After adding water the peat and smoke intensifies and the tar note is reduced. Then it gets mintier and even shows a note of old-school bubblegum.
    • Finish
Dry, it is bitter without getting acidic. There is spice here again but also a slight sweetness to that spice. Minty in the throat.
