  1. glen efze scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Gaja, more goddess than spirit or demon, adorns the label of this bottling from the Demons Ghosts series by A Dream of Scotland. The number 1816 could be tattooed somewhere on her shoulders. After maturation in a refill bourbon cask, the whisky was finished in a port cask and was bottled at 11 years old. And, of course, this should also be an undisclosed Lagavulin.

    • Nose
On the nose this South Islay is less sweet than the Dracula from the same series. The smoke is strong, perhaps a little more ashy, which may be due to the lower sweetness. Although, after a while the sweet fruit flavors work their way forward, and here too there is strawberry jam, as well as a few strawberry leaves.
    • Taste
In the mouth, the fruits are complemented by chocolate notes, slightly bitter milk chocolate with a fruit filling, as well as smoke, soot and oily ash. The wood comes as a pleasant note on the palate without becoming noticeable or even musty. The smoke has an almost elegant funk and harmonizes well with the fruity sweetness.
    • Finish
The whisky has a sweet, oily consistency, the start is sweet, then the alcohol comes and gives you strength. The whisky ends with a decent dryness and pleasant woody notes on the palate. A nice development.

The Dracula was perhaps a touch sweeter, this one is a bit more ashy in the smoke. This is also a whisky that draws its power from the wonderful combination of smoke and sweet wine finish, making it irresistible for smoke fans. What do those who hate smoking do who can't enjoy such whiskys? Ralfy recently philosophized about ecological aspects of Peat and possible alternatives. There is no alternative to the different flavors that Peat develops depending on its origin. And the whisky industry only needs a fraction of the peat that e.g. B. is wasted in horticulture. There are now alternatives for this. Not for peat in whiskys like this.
