[July, 2022] A quick review of a sample...

...which is a flawless and nicely balanced classical Laphroaig from the early nineties. Not to compare with today's punchy and simple Laphroaig style so depending on your preference you might either prefer this or the more modern drams, I guess.
    • Nose
      90 90
The colour is yellow gold and the nose offers a powerful profile after some minutes of oxidation. The peat is quiet strong compared to other old Laphroaig (but much less than today's punchy Laphroaig displays), the fruits (among them green banana) are loud and clear and the barley sugars and wood keep the balance. A nice nose for an Islay dram, no doubt but I like the much more complex profiles of even older Laphroaig (e.g., the 30-years old WB210892 from 1991) even better.
    • Taste
      89 89
The taste is nicely balanced too with all three malt, peat and wood in good harmony. The barley sugars are present all the time while the fruits retreat somewhat. This profile is not complex but it is very quaffable. What else to say? Slàinte!
    • Finish
      90 90
The initial mouthfeel is warming and coating with some drying impressions of cold ashes. The finish is long and turns even sweeter on stronger barley sugars and fruits which I like. No distracting moments here. Some water turns the nose punchier and the taste smoother while a bigger splash release chalky-mineral aromas both in the nose and on the palate. I like this dram both neat and reduced to about 43% abv.
