  1. glen efze scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Another Craigellachie from Murray McDavid, this time aged 11 years in the series of Single Malt Journey's bottled for Kirsch Import. The barrel specified is a 1st fill PX Hogshead. It is not immediately clear whether it is finished or fully ripe, the color is strong golden but not exaggerated. With the combination of 1st fill and hogshead it could also be a finish.

    • Nose
In the nose, the strong Craigellachie character meets a honey-sweet base, which results in a very nice combination, as no sulphurous off-notes appear here at first. There is sweet plum must, plus caramel, some bitter chocolate and malt. In between, white chocolate with mango sauce or white peach shines through, vanilla and raisins, but is then captured again by the bitter flavors. It actually smells quite delicious.
    • Taste
The taste has sweet caramel, the whisky is creamy and has vanilla as a base. And of course he needs some water so as not to be too strong. Then the alcohol is ok and the whisky develops after a sweet start rather woody with a bit of Craigellachie funk, which, in contrast to the previous Craigellachie from a Bordeaux barrique, does not become soapy.
    • Finish
The whisky finishes drying with oak on the palate which has a good aroma. Slight bitter substances remain in the mouth.

This is not an overly sweet PX whisky, and certainly not a sticky PX whisky. There are bitter aromas and bitter substances. Perhaps the sherry character could be a little more pronounced, 1st fill PX promises more here than it actually delivers. On the other hand, it's wonderful that this wasn't a sticky syrup barrel like other bottlers like to use.
