The Shinig Dram is a nice shop not far from me with their own bottlings, which are always interesting. I couldn't pass up ordering the new Balmenach as a 5cl sample as I rarely had the distillery in my glass.

And admittedly I was challenged as a drinker but not disappointed. This dram is a full meal - pretty much the opposite of an 'easy sipper'.

With the first jar I let it sit with the lid on for half an hour. At first I was met with quite a sulfur cloud. After a few days with the second dram, I left the glass open for an hour and lo and behold: the sulfur cloud gave way to a hearty smell of pretzel - baked bread, lye, salt - overlaid with plum jam and all kinds of dried fruit. After a while I take roasted almonds and coffee true, which is very pleasant. But there is always a slight smell of sulfur.
    • Taste
      86 86
The taste surprises me, it tastes like a meal: bacon, eggs, green asparagus, a sumptuous breakfast, so to speak! Plus the sweetness of rice syrup, malty and somehow fermented. Plum is also there in the taste, then quickly disappears, leaving herbs of bitter liqueur on the palate. I've only played minimally with water here because I actually really like the drinking strength. In general, it is relatively mature for its 10 years, the alcohol is wonderfully integrated.
    • Finish
      86 86
In the aftermath, you can feel the creamy sweetness of the sherry cask alongside the herbs. Caramel from the oak mixes with the dark fruit, which now appears more clearly. As the herbal bitters subside, they become delicious spices, cinnamon, cloves, pepper.

The finish is long and pleasant. It's constantly developing a lot from the nose to the finish.
