Linkwood, 17 years old, bourbon cask, bottled by the Brühler whisky house in the A Dream of Scotland series as a bottling for the Whisky Fair Rhein-Ruhr 2023 in Düsseldorf. For 17 years, the whisky is quite light, it has more the color of a strong white wine. But that doesn't have to be bad, with all the overcharged color monsters that are out there at the moment. The issue price was just under €109.

    • Nose
Does age manifest itself here in the nosing? The whisky smells fresher than settled, the alcohol is noticeable, and there is also a slight solvent component, but it evaporates. And it has a strong, sweet scent of ripe pears, maybe a little bit of lychee and the artificial flavors of iced tea - but pleasant. All this is sweet, but is also accompanied by tart wood tones.
    • Taste
Undiluted, the whisky is quite sharp in the mouth. Even with a little water it stays hot, creaminess and sweetness are more of a feeling than a direct impression. And so the aromas of iced tea with lychee or dragon fruit are rather subliminal and the light nougat chocolate note unfortunately quickly disappeared.
    • Finish
Above all, the spiciness in the mouth remains, some wood hides with notes of chocolate in the cheek pockets. All in all unspectacular.

This Linkwood is much too hot for me, it leaves a sharpness that it has after 17 years with 55.2% vol. actually shouldn't have. This was certainly not a 1st fill cask, because there are hardly any sweet caramel or creamy vanilla notes. Somehow the 17 years don't come into their own. Of course, after this time the whisky has no young aromas - but there is still a lack of maturation, I find the alcohol in particular disturbing, it is clearly solvent and not enough aroma carrier, because in fact it releases the briefly appearing aromas from the mouth too quickly and then leaves them behind sharpness.

Otherwise it is an unspectacular bourbon-aged whisky. And thus does not meet my expectations for a 17-year-old Linkwood from the single cask. It may be that the age of the Linkwood justifies the price - the taste experience doesn't really justify it in my opinion.
