  1. glen efze scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

A private cask bottling from Kilchoman for the whisky trade whisky1.de. The whisky matured for 15 years in an ex-bourbon cask and comes from the distillery's second year of production. The whisky was released in 2022 and will still be available in the shop in summer 2024 for €149. The whisky has a lighter gold tone.

    • Nose
In the nosing it is initially a little closed, the smoke is bitter, perhaps also salty, there are burnt roast aromas, dark bread with a strong crust. With a few drops of water the whisky becomes a little fruitier, light citrus peel, a little Earl Grey tea.
    • Taste
In the mouth it becomes a little more maritime, the sea salt note comes along. The alcohol is present, the caramel is burnt and has a few slightly bitter aspects, perhaps also a slightly black crust from the rye bread. The sweetness does not develop immediately, but rather comes with overly caramelized, burnt aspects - which is nevertheless an interesting taste experience.
    • Finish
On the palate, the smoke is accompanied by a slightly malty note, which remains dry and bitter. In the end, however, a lovely, peaty, smoky aspect remains on the palate with a very light forest honey component.

This is not a whisky to sip on the go. The whisky is closed and allows its aromas to flash and then disappear again, becoming dry and sooty with charred seaweed and then briefly having caramel or very dark honey. It is an interplay that suits Islay well and makes the whisky interesting and unusual. I like it, even if I probably wouldn't buy it. But it is good to have had the sample.
