  1. glen efze scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Staoisha often appears in the bottlings of the independent bottler Michel Reick. Two bottlings will be released in spring 2023. This one is 8 years old and was finished in the Enmore Rum Barrel. The color is golden yellow. Staoisha is the powerfully smoky version of Bunnahabhain. At €85 - €89 I think the bottling is ambitiously priced.

    • Nose
The smell of the smoke is of course very present and rough. Alcohol is also noticeable. There is also a sweet base that is more noticeable than actually smelled. With a few drops of water it becomes sweeter and more approachable.
    • Taste
The mouthfeel is very sweet, sticky and oily. This has less of an impact on the taste because the smoke neutralizes the sweetness. There is a fruity note that is somewhat reminiscent of tropical fruits - but the fruit gums.
    • Finish
The whisky lives from the strong smoke, which remains in the mouth and ensures a slightly dry, woody, smoky aftertaste.

The interplay between the sweetness with the liqueur-like mouthfeel and the smoke, which creates a rather bitter-dry taste, is interesting. Overall, I find it too sweet and fruity with too little complexity.
