  1. glen efze scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

The basic data for this whisky are similar to a bottling from a sister cask - but here it is 56.2% vol. Cask strength with which the whisky comes into the bottle. It was finished for 3.5 years in a Pinot Noir hogshead from the Pawis winery made from European oak, before which it matured for 8 years in 1st fill ex-Bourbon.

    • Nose
The aromas are stronger on the nose than when bottled at drinking strength, the fruit aromas are more pronounced and somewhat darker. The wood tones come as a dark chocolate mousse, with ripe, dark cherries. With a few drops of water, Scotch Mist appears in the glass and the nutty aromas become stronger.
    • Taste
The taste of the whisky has clear European wood, which pushes the vanilla aromas into the background. There are also ripe cherries and plums, which are already starting to ferment a little. Then the nutty-tart chocolate is in the foreground again. But there is also a sweetness and oiliness underneath that was missing in the drinking strength.
    • Finish
Here the oak tones are more lasting and linger longer on the palate. The whisky ends with a slightly dry, tart note of cocoa and oak.

It is an oaky whisky, the red wine imparts less fruity flavors to the whisky than fortified sweet wines do. However, it is wood that does not overpower and is fresh and clean enough to give off predominantly nutty chocolate tones. Of the six German wine finishes, I like this one the best. The Scotch Mist with the addition of a few drops of water also underlines the oiliness of the whisky.
