    Okay, today's battle with
    WB296878
Old School Single Malt - Coastal Edition 50 Years of Oloroso Sherry Butt Batch 4

    Very interesting
...With water... not recommended... the smell weakens and the mouthfeel becomes more peppery.
    • Nose
Soft and rounded, but there are definitely some parallels to the 50s SV. This one has more nutty nougat, molasses, and malt, some citrus, and a hint of coffee. More mineral than the other. The fruit notes are just a bit hidden behind the nougat. The nose is also great, and yet there's more alcohol, but it's less sharp. The other one is more complex, and I love the smell of "good" old wood. It balances out nicely. Some cherry and cinnamon, very slightly burnt wood, and a touch of forest honey.
    • Taste
Syrupy and sticky like molasses and forest honey in wild berries. Caramel and a hint of butter cookies. I actually find the 50-year-old SV slightly better in taste... but that's nitpicking. The similarity is undeniable, though. More nougat and hazelnut notes come through here, along with coffee and cocoa. I really like that. Less wood... but surprisingly, for its age, I don't find it overpowering. Then comes minerality and ginger. A touch of menthol here too. Both are truly great malts... but this one is a bit more bitter in the finish... at least to my palate today.
    • Finish
Some citrus and ginger with nutty aromas. A bit shorter than the SV, but good...both very tasty malts.
