I like that, but he's pretty one-dimensional. It's full of smoke, with a lot of punch, but there's not much else. Some undefined sweetness and that's basically it.

    Notes from a blind tasting.

Immediately after pouring, rich smoke, caramel and dark fruit puree come together beautifully. The smoke is initially campfire type with a slightly phenolic touch and a little more than medium intensity. After just a few moments the campfire gave way to the chemistry laboratory, lots of floor wax and disinfectant, plus mineral and somewhat maritime notes. There is neither sweetness nor fruity notes, but after putting the glass down I have massive baked bananas in my nose. After standing for a while, a well-rounded overall picture emerges with mainly coal firing and malty peat sweetness as well as a few dates. When heated, it closes almost completely before a lot of acid is released, furniture polish. At the end it levels out again with strong phenolic coal firing with clear acidity and reserved sweetness as well as a little cowshed. The amount of smoke is now significantly higher than at the beginning.

The mouthfeel is extremely oily, the attack is delayed and quite strong. On the aromatic side, the peat sweetness has its hands full to assert itself against the bitter notes of the barrel. For a brief moment there was also an industrial alcohol note. Finally also menthol. There is no trace of any fruitiness left here. In the second sip the whole thing seems a little more balanced and there is also an idea of fruit acid alongside the rather dominant barrel acid.
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish is very long, initially characterized by dryness and menthol, slowly becoming slightly sweet and ashy. The chest area is warmed properly. In the end, the strongly sour note of fresh beech smoke (smoked product almost immediately after being removed from the oven) sticks to the palate. In the second sip less menthol and not quite as dry. It's really extremely long, the coal will be hanging between my teeth for almost half an hour. Hours later, the empty glass smells enormously of smoked eel.
