It has definitely come quite a way from the earlier editions, more sherry influenced and less spirit heavy (likely due to the increasing age) and the colour is also quite significantly darker than it's predecessors. I am finding it difficult to reach past this dram at the moment. Value (£70) : 7/10
    • Nose
It starts off with dried fruits as you would expect. Dried figs, sultanas, morello cherries and strawberries. Sugared orange peels. Then a sweetness comes through, molasses and toffee, dark and rich. There is a definite element of oak/red wine here with tannic grape must and ground coffee. The alcohol is very well integrated for being 52% ABV, there is only a light ginger prickle to the nose. I feel that the nose at least is more oloroso driven but the PX influence is intertwined perfectly with it.
    • Taste
The initial mouthfeel is quite creamy and mouth coating, definitely some weight to it here. It immediately feels rich and decadent, even sweeter here than on the nose. The tasting note of baklava is perfect in this instance with brown sugar, honey and pistachio notes coming through. More creamy dark chocolate. As it develops, more tart red berries come through and it becomes more bitter and oak forward. Ginger heat continues with baking spices of cinnamon and nutmeg.
    • Finish
The finish is medium to long in length. It starts off where the palate ended, quite oak forward, the red wine tannins enveloping the palate with notes of dark cocoa and cinnamon spice. Then as that hit dissipates it becomes sweeter with more toffee and Demerara sugar notes. This is balanced by a bitter espresso note and a slight herbal aniseed/mint at the end.
