It has definitely come quite a way from the earlier editions, more sherry influenced and less spirit heavy (likely due to the increasing age) and the colour is also quite significantly darker than it's predecessors. I am finding it difficult to reach past this dram at the moment. Value (£70) : 7/10
    • Nose
It starts off with dried fruits as you would expect. Dried figs, sultanas, morello cherries and strawberries. Sugared orange peels. Then a sweetness comes through, molasses and toffee, dark and rich. There is a definite element of oak/red wine here with tannic grape must and ground coffee. The alcohol is very well integrated for being 52% ABV, there is only a light ginger prickle to the nose. I feel that the nose at least is more oloroso driven but the PX influence is intertwined perfectly with it.
    • Taste
The initial mouthfeel is quite creamy and mouth coating, definitely some weight to it here. It immediately feels rich and decadent, even sweeter here than on the nose. The tasting note of baklava is perfect in this instance with brown sugar, honey and pistachio notes coming through. More creamy dark chocolate. As it develops, more tart red berries come through and it becomes more bitter and oak forward. Ginger heat continues with baking spices of cinnamon and nutmeg.
    • Finish
The finish is medium to long in length. It starts off where the palate ended, quite oak forward, the red wine tannins enveloping the palate with notes of dark cocoa and cinnamon spice. Then as that hit dissipates it becomes sweeter with more toffee and Demerara sugar notes. This is balanced by a bitter espresso note and a slight herbal aniseed/mint at the end.

    • Nose

Dark honey, toffee, caramel, nuts, dried fruits, chocolate, sweet pipe tobacco, dark berries, cooked fruits, jam, vanilla, sherry wood - very nice actually
    • Taste
      88 88
Oily, creamy, toffee, chocolate, dark honey, good sweetness, spices, nutmeg, cloves, raisins, hint of rum soaked cherries, sherry wood, liquorice - not bad
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium long, warm, more liquorice, spices, cinnamon, cloves, raisins, little varnish

Caramel, spices, dark fruits, varnish, red fruits, quite sweet and syrupy, not very complex but quite decent

  6. KayMeertens scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Fourth whisky from The Lakes that I've tasted, clearly the least interesting one.
    • Nose
Cashew, apple, vanilla. More malty with water.
    • Taste
Sugared almond, green apple, dry young wood and vanilla. Water ruins it: Cardboard.
    • Finish
      Sugared almond, apple and wood.

I think this is a fine whisky, just maybe not my preferred style.
    • Nose
It's pretty dense. There's hints of juniper, strawberries, eucalyptus and rose petals, but also figs, sultanas and cranberries. Touches of oak, acidic red wine and aceto di balsamico too.
    • Taste
The oak is very present. Ginger, cloves and cinnamon with whiffs of dates and raisins. Maybe some nutmeg too, accompanied by dark chocolate and salted caramel. It's really all about the wood here.
    • Finish
Drying and tannic with lingering spices.

Quite an interesting nose, as described by HLZ. However, I have a sharpness (due to age?).
    • Taste
      89 89
In the mouth also a bit sharp, but still pleasantly round and soft.
    • Finish
      84 84
There is no special note left in the finish. Not unpleasant, but rather neutral. Maybe light caramel.

Decent on the nose, though the palate didn't keep up. I will stay tuned on the distillery, but nobody knows whether a new whisky maker is going to keep the product improving (like Mr Ghandi did)
    • Nose
      89 89
Very promising nose owing to decent quality European oak sherry casks used. Burnt sugar, sultana, fresh cranberries, stewed apple. The main theme would be wood spices, with dried ginger and orange, clove, cinnamon and freshly shaved oaks. Balsamico and Fanta adds acidity and also vitality to the nose.
    • Taste
      87 87
Good oily texture and considerably good-bodied, but still young. Dark chocolate and caramel, fudge and fresh cranberries offered sweetness, but the dram also showed good acidity of orange Fanta. Spices then dominated, with gingers, cloves and peppers. Good savoury from salted broth. The oak bitterness also developed
    • Finish
      86 86
Moderately long an drying. Gingery and peppery warmth, oaky. The bitterness reinforced, and the final mouthfeel was somehow greasy.

    Absolutely sublime.
Incredible balance of big, robust sherried notes.
    Even better than Whiskymakers #4!
