  1. glen efze scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

In the Best Dram series, Michel Reick has bottled a Balmenach that has been matured in 1st fill Banyuls Barrique. The whisky is 8 years old, four months are missing to the 9. In the glass it shimmers golden with a strong rosé impact.

    • Nose
Balmenach is owned by Inver House, there is no core range. The strong whiskys disappear in blends. And power is clearly noticeable in the nose. The whisky has earthy aromas, the fruit lay on the floor and is rotten and dried. Overall there is a nice sweetness reminiscent of wine gums. It doesn't look too young on the nose either, the aromas are harmonious and not metallic, and are not reminiscent of fermenting mash. The curse of the wine barrels also shimmers in the background with a slight note of sulphur.
    • Taste
The whisky is sweet with caramel and ripe fruit, the wine gums are also present in the taste. In addition, there is a strong, spicy note in which sulfur is present. These shouldn’t just come from the distillation with worm tub condensation, but the wine barrel should also play a part in it. This aspect disturbs the otherwise fruity-spicy wine aromas. The whisky can tolerate a little water, it burns easily without the alcohol itself being too strong.
    • Finish
The whisky has a share of hellfire, which somewhat covers a dark chocolate wine note.

This Balmenach is quite tasty and has matured quite well despite its young age. The sulfur note is a bit annoying for me, although it is not very pronounced and therefore acceptable. However, I have the feeling that the whisky could be much better if this note were not present or only marginally.
