Brave New Spirits are a new bottler and present the Guerrilla Casks, a series that relies on extraordinary 'rebellious' casks. A Deanston with post-aging in 1st fill Merlot Wine Barrique has been bottled here. Otherwise there is little information about the bottling. So let's see how rebellious this whisky really is - or if it's just about flashy marketing.

    • Nose
Vanilla aromas and strong red wine with nutty aromas on the nose. The alcohol is noticeable, but gets better with a little water. Nutty with red cherries and some woody bitterness - not exactly rebellious, but tasty.
    • Taste
The taste of the whisky is rather tart and nutty with some wood. The Merlot contributes a few cherry aromas, which are not too sweet and juicy, but also have a tart stem. Chocolate with a hint of blackcurrant. The aromas are not very fancy or strong, but are pleasant and also a bit complex and mature.
    • Finish
The nutty aromas also remain in the finish, there is some wood, initially a slight sweetness in the background and then a drier aftertaste.

Sorry - but what is guerrilla here? where is the rebellion This is a normal, relatively good Deanston, like the ones that a number of bottlers put on the market.

A Deanston from the red wine barrel - and in contrast to the 10-year-old original bottling completely without sulphur. That's very pleasant. And it definitely has notes reminiscent of dark fruity Merlot. It's not rebellious, not particularly complex or layered, not particularly flashy - but quite well done and tasty. Would you like to pay €90 for it? Doesn't have to be - the price makes me rebellious ...
