There aren't quite as many strawberries as one would expect in a strawberry field, but there are actually a few. In the mouth, the spiciness makes life difficult for the fruity flavors of the Blair Athol. Not bad, but not really convincing.
    • Nose
Malt and vanilla in the first contact. Then follow slightly sour, light fruits, including strawberries, not quite ripe yet. It slowly turns into a strawberry pastry, lightly peppered. The sweetness is slowly becoming clearer.
    • Taste
Malty sweet and creamy soft onset. Followed by some peppery spiciness and dark caramel. The strawberries are embedded in dark chocolate.
    • Finish
Pretty short aftertaste. The flavors dissipate quickly. What remains is the warming effect of the sharpness.

I don't really get the point of this one.

Full review here: I think, in a very saturated market, we should ask ourselves 'why' something exists...

Very fruity, unusual but delicious notes of strawberry from the red wine barriques. There is a sharp spice note in the palate that makes this whisky a little difficult to engage with but it is very drinkable, unusual but in a delicious way. I bought a second bottle which I never do so that tells you all you need to know.

Blair Athol 2011 - 2021, 10 years, "Strawberry Fields". 50% alc. Bottler: Uncharted Whisky. Aging: Batch of three red wine barrels (full maturation)

Nose: Exciting, a mixture of red currants, strawberries and vanilla sauce, with relatively clear malt aromas and a little rhubarb. White chocolate, leafy green and pepper remain in the background. All in all, a very fresh and pleasantly summery appearance.

Palate: Starts very creamy and sweet, resembles the first impression of the nose, but then builds powerfully, almost stormy. Lots of pepper, dry oak, some cinnamon and ginger, chocolate with dried chili. The green of the leaves is also back, but rather dry and reminiscent of hay.

Finish: Short to medium length, warming and spicy. Lots of oak, some caramel and cinnamon, some black pepper.

Conclusion: For 10 years in the red wine cask, this Blair Athol is quite light, you can see what other bottlers do with their casks to inject a bright dark color into the whisky in a few months. This one has drawn a lot of aroma from the wood over the ten years, but the hotter spices and pepper are a challenge, definitely an exciting barrel aging. 84/100 points (2022)

The eponymous strawberries are clearly in the nose, but unfortunately a somewhat peppery spiciness and a rather dry finish dominates on the tongue.
    • Nose
Apple, cereals, cream, strawberries in various forms, especially Campino strawberry-cream candies and Münsterländer strawberry punch.
    • Taste
Grass, hay, rather dry, passion fruit tugs at the tongue, mirabelle plum, a little pepper spiciness.
    • Finish
      Spicy, Oak, Dry, Aromatic.

Blair Athol makes a distillate with a lot of "backbone" and is therefore able to withstand extreme cask influences. That is why BA does very well on sherry casks, of which the Flora & Fauna bottlings from the past are good examples. This time it concerns a vatting of a few barrels that previously contained wine. Given the color, the influence of the barrel has been limited. The whisky gives off a great aroma that lives up to the name for this bottling. A versatile and cheerful, elated fruitiness makes you long for spring. On the palate, this Blair Athol comes across as mature and balanced (long live batches!) where, as expected, the original distillate has held up well against the unorthodox maturation. A remarkably clean whisky too, which is often a challenge with wine barrels. Complex yet accessible, but not a daily dram. The experience is very reminiscent of the Waterford The Cuvee, especially the fruity character. Definitely recommended for anyone who wants something different in the glass.
