From a sample. I learned about these Fable bottlings from a retailer who advised they would be a good way to distinguish new-make characteristics between the many highland producers. This bottle certainly highlights Linkwood's strengths compared to Inchgower. While casks and style are always in consideration, I much prefer the Linkwood. No standout qualities, but I can sense a quality new-make and its more in line with my preferred Highland producers (Glen Elgin, for example). I compared this dram to Fable Inchgower 12 Year 2009 (58%). Auchroisk and Glendronach samples will be next.

Wildflower honey, sweet straw, fresh apples, cooked fruit. More inviting than the Inchgower, for sure. Juicy. In the cask-strength glass, some light banana notes appear after 30 mins.

With water first. Quite a nice balance to the cascade of flavors. Initial sweetness, followed by a marzipan nutty spice. At cask strength, much more balance than the Inchgower, and while more pleasant overall, still lacking some complexity. I digress, as this tasting was meant to identify the character of the distillery more than the bottling. In this regard, I find the Linkwood's taste to be quite well balanced in its combination of delicate juice up front, heathery-sweetness though the mid-palate, and just a touch of drying bitterness at the end.
    • Finish
      83 83
The finish is mostly a malty sweetness with a slightly drying oaked bitterness that lingers with medium length. While it might lack distinction, it's a quality dram. I look forward to seeing what Linkwood can do with a sherry cask...
