  1. Dram Dracula scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

90 points when first opened.... now, 89 points. It gets a bit off-balanced.
    • Nose
Quite a classic Chichibu, but dialed up a beautiful notch. It's got that typical sweet and sourness notes along with a richer, fruitier, more caramel feel that probably means that the vat here for the US market may have some older juice along with some choice ex-bourbon casks.
    • Taste
Yup, very Japanese, very Chichibu. Again, this has more fruits, more complexity than some of the younger Chichibus I am used to. Some bubblegum sweetness. A fragrant polished oak that is so typical of Chichibu, and that I sometimes get in Yoichis, and of course Hanyu. Swims extremely well the addition of water. Oily and slightly sour, perhaps some 'li hing mui'. I am very glad that as the Yoichi brand has deteriorated over the past decade (used to be my favorite distillery), especially due to the fact that they have pretty much stopped releasing single casks, Chichibu, which has just as good of a distillate, perhaps better, is essentially taking up the slack in terms of the best that Japanese has to offer. The virgin oak casks (called "New Barrel") are detectable here in the palate believe it or not. A beautiful combination of barrels for the US market. I bought this for $430 USD in Feb 2022 in the secondary market. It's definitely not a bad price for the quality, but of course, it is still pricey considering this is not very old. Still, quality is quality, and props to Ichiro Akuto.
    • Finish
Very good length. Chichibu is way up there in terms of the best distillate in the whisky world.

Side note: Shizuoka may have a slightly better and more complex distillate.
