  1. Martinesk scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

In batch 1, I had a crazy journey through various fruit gardens in my mouth. With this expectation, Batch 2 disappointed me bitterly.
    I don't notice him for 16 years.
    • Nose
      83 83
Sour and slightly musty on the nose. Delicately vanilla behind.
    • Taste
      82 82
Rather flat, then dry bitter. Not uncomfortable but insignificant.
    • Finish
      83 83
Bright, dry, light wood. Short to medium long.

A surprisingly wonderful, soothing dram. Yet it behaved very much, if not totally, like a bourbon cask matured one instead of sherry. That being said, it's still splendid. Not sure how many fills the casks are, but the result befits a time honored product should be. Well done!
    • Nose
      87 87
Rich and thick whiff of mixed aroma, a lot is happening at the same time. Apricot was picked up, and a little shortbread. Quite promising so far. Very elegant scent of peach skin. Cream soda, Turkish-Delight. Very gentle wood influence appeared over time, and more cream soda. Caramel toffee followed. Yeast tablets too. Always find this very seductive! Despite the stated cask type, the nose actually leans towards bourbon casks matured. But still the result is very pleasure, very adorable, very soothing. Hard to put the glass down.
    • Taste
      86 86
Light, clean and even crispy mouthfeel. Fruit juice, grass juice, a little cough syrup, some dried apricot, which is very good. Chopped almond at the back, and some peanuts pistachio mix. The bottle strength seems spot on.
    • Finish
      84 84
Some umami aftertaste at the back of the mouth, echoing the yeast tablets. Would score higher if not for the slightly more than desired resinous mouthfeel.

This was a sample courtesy of Peatbogger and Slainte Mhath.
The last Fettercairn I had was a Nas a while back and it was fine so it's nice to try a decent age statement.
    • Nose
      84 84
Lovely fruity nose of peach and apricots.
Honey and citrus notes of Lemon.
There is a herbal tea of some sort and pear drop boiled sweets.
A barn full of fresh straw bails.
    • Taste
      86 86
This feels very thin on first arrival and then bang, it's as if it was hiding and then jumps out.
I am pleased this is 46% and the tangy fruit balances well with the sharp spice.
I can concur with Peatbogger on the nutty notes but it does come in late.
    • Finish
      82 82
If there is a downside then it's the finish which I think is a little short but I'm not going to punish it as there are no off notes.

Unfortunately, too much sulfur in the nose and on the palate. Significantly worse than the first release; people who are sensitive to sulfur – like me – beware!

  9. F_Weinberg scored this whisky 83 points Member Senior

    This isn't bad.
    • Nose
      85 85
Fresh pine needles, damp soil... another savoury element - miso soup, maybe? Something with a touch of umami, no doubt. Some mangos, passion fruits, bananas, with a touch of acetone, like a high ester rum.
    • Taste
      82 82
Quite dry and bitter, with some up-front spice of oak and black pepper. Lingering in the background lots of citrusy sweetness can be found, but it's slightly overpowered by the bitterness of the wood.
    • Finish
      83 83
A bit more well-balanced than the palate, as some more sweet and citrus notes emerge and the woodiness is less overpowering. The finish is medium in length. This doesn't need water.

Thanks to Slainte Mhath for the pour and the sample.
Up and rising is probably a suitable term for Fettercairn distillery.
The quality of this official bottling can't be down to just a fluke.
    • Nose
      84 84
A very unusual whisky nose, yet there is something classic about it. You kind of get the feeling you will not be disappointed.
It smells oily, with resinous wood sap.
      Earthy mushroom notes.
      Underlying sweet fruit.
    • Taste
      86 86
Arrives with instant peppery spice. Not aggressive, and fortunately it resides slowly rather than escalate.
This gives way to much sweeter fruity notes mixed with some fatty nuts. A very tasty, bold and delicious combination.
    • Finish
      88 88
Slow fade where the fruits develop a much more red character.
And it leaves you with a very pleasant long lasting jam sweetness.

The 2020 version didn't work for me at all, let's see how it goes with the 2021 version.
    • Nose
Creamy toffee, lightly herbal, sawdust, mango,
    • Taste
Full-bodied, dry, elegant, leaves a small film on the palate, the herbs increase the bitterness a little.
    • Finish
The herbiness intensifies towards the end. This is better for me than the 2020 version but still not a new favorite whisky.

Lured by its craft presentation, this Fettercairn was an imprudent impulse buy which I started to regret when I checked reviews afterwards. Whiffs of pinewood, pears and mango emerge from the glass, followed by mushrooms, hay and olive oil. Unusual, subtle and inviting. On the palate, citrus fruits, black pepper and a touch of stout are pushed to the side by walnuts, melon and distant honey. Rosemary, lemon zest and pronounced sherry notes characterize the long and solid finish. Lesson learned, right to an opinion does not make the opinion right.

Like the first release, well done and differentiated from the mainstream. Still quite different from Release 1. Fruitier and more tropical here despite the predominance of citrus and also a bit fermented, a bit more sour, a bit salty. A little chocolate first in the taste.
Drinking strength adjusted perfectly. With time and quantity, bitter substances become noticeable in the finish.

A small 2cl sample while playing online poker - this one fits in here very well, because it doesn't require that much attention, but is still exciting and tasty.

The price-performance ratio seems to me to be very good if you are in the mood for an unconventional whisky that tastes good and doesn't cost much.

Between 87 and 88 points, depending on how you feel on the day. 88 points for me today.
    • Nose

      blenders
A very minimal sulfur note (which could also be a dry influence of the Palo Cortado) and behind it, almost next to it, is a slightly iodized and salty smokiness. Funny, because the key data doesn't actually match the description. However, the sweetness is clearly attributable to aging in ex-bourbon casks.

The profile is comparatively full-bodied and the alcohol content is just right here so that it is sufficiently intense, but not a bit fizzy.
    • Taste
      88
The mouthfeel on the palate reflects the nose very well and here too there is a dry spiciness that could easily be the Palo Cortado. Somehow I really like this simple but exciting profile, because it's clean and doesn't have any big mistakes.
    • Finish
The finish is at least medium, slightly salty tingling and here again consistent with regard to the overall aroma profile

  18. Totoro scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A completely different animal from the 1st release. Much "brighter" and more bourbon-based, less wine-infused and certainly less sweet.
Feels like they used some extremely sour/tart/acerbic ex-bourbon casks here, which were too potent in flavor for the sherry casks to make much of a dent.
I don't find this bad at all, just very counterintuitive after the previous bottling, as it goes in almost the opposite direction and concentrates on a very "un-modern" dry, acidic freshness.
    • Nose
      86 86
Sour, dry, and straw-like initially, like a full-term ex-bourbon maturation, with a green fruitiness (quince, gooseberry) and aromas of grass and hay. After a while the Oloroso and Palo Cortado butts rear their (cask)heads, bringing oaky, savory and nutty notes as well as a pleasant mustiness along with them. I'd say this needs time in the glass and patience to get behind the first wave of dryness and acidity.
    • Taste
      85 85
The sourness is there on the palate as well, until the omnipresent lemon is complemented by honey and spices on the mid-palate. Gets progressively sweeter, and displays a nice chocolate & nut combo before it's all over, but it also never loses this sour/bitter basic character that may be a hard sell for some.
    • Finish
      84 84
Tart, citric, astringent ex-bc flavors dominate here, with a considerable peppery heat and just a slight salty / savory / nutty touch hinting at the sherried components.

  19. 2ndSip scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

Aroma emphasizes fruity, whole fruit salad is mixed in, which didn't stop at tropical fruits, great.
In the taste first more seasoning and spices. I would have expected more fruit...
A shockingly short finish for me.
    [86 - 82 = good whisky -> get (second) bottle? Perhaps...]
um yeah, the malt isn't bad, but it's not the hammer either. I honestly hoped for more in terms of taste; I'm really disappointed with the short finish.
    • Nose
      88 88
fruity banana sprinkled with cinnamon (that dominates the aroma for me). Tropical fruits of mango, papaya and pineapple follow.
This is joined by red fruits, which also bring a sour touch (the pineapple/kiwi association also helps here).
Light hazelnut in the background. Seasoning and spices are not there at first or very far in the background; it is decidedly fruity.
With time a kind of brewer's yeast fermentation/maltiness emerges; only subtle, but somehow perceptible - that's where the Palo Cortado comes through for me.
    • Taste
      82 82
peppery-spicy start on the tongue; here more seasoning and spices, the fruits from the nose are initially pushed aside. It becomes drier, the sherry comes through stronger.
Slightly bitter note of dark chocolate/dark chocolate with 70% cocoa content.
Second sip: more fruit perceptible, although that peppery spiciness and spiciness slides throughout the mouth.
Cinnamon, nutmeg... unfortunately I can't find more.
    • Finish
      80 80
nutty aroma (hazelnut), some wood spice, but shockingly short for a 16-year-old.

  20. larswehmeier scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Tasty, well aged. Pleasantly dry due to the influence of Palo Cortado Sherry. Nice combination of tropical fruits and nutty aromas.
    • Nose
Spicy, a bit of white pepper, fruit salad with clear melon, vanilla, apricot, oak, fine white wine acidity. Gets cuter over time.
    • Taste
Surprisingly strong. Drinking strength is great. White pepper. Spicy Oak. drupes. Walnut.
    • Finish
      Spicy, dry, medium length. warming.

Brought this bottle to Manchester Whisky Club as part of a member led tasting in March 2022. First impression was less pungent on the nose than the first edition, probably due to the absence of port in the cask makeup. Sherry came through on the palette, though I'm not familiar with this particular sherry so can't say if it's characteristic. A good dram and reasonably priced.

It's a little lighter than the 1st release,
but that doesn't have to mean anything.
At first he smells a lot like weed,
    quite spicy with dried fruits.
With a little time it gains aroma.
And to my great joy, the long-awaited sherry aromas are now added...
    The start quite strong,
again this spice, which is quite dominant.
It is by no means sweet, lets its tart barrel aroma unfold,
although here and there small synapses of fruity aromas gain the upper hand - but only briefly and rather delicately.
He definitely has something of peaches, raisins, sloes.
This is not a high-flyer for me - neither was the first one, by the way - but it has something, impresses with its individuality and independence.

Wonderful tropical nose. In addition to lemons, pineapple and melon resonate. A trace of light plums. Unfortunately, the nose is a bit weak on the chest and does not have a lot of volume, too little depth

Initially broadly sweet in taste, then transitioning to a spicy pepperiness to a pleasantly bitter finish. Many nut flavors then delight in the medium-long finish.

  29. WhiskyManifestBS scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

The first nose shows fresh citrus notes with sweet dried plums and a hint of hazelnuts. A very subtle note of vanilla creeps up in the background.
It starts out very sweet on the tongue, then spreads slightly peppery over the wings of the tongue.
In my mouth I mainly have the dried plums again. Towards the finish and far in the aftertaste, roasted hazelnuts are very present. They stay on for so long that you can sit there smacking your lips 5 minutes later - wonderful.

A first, quick impression after two drams:
    • Nose
      88 88
Slightly sour and fruity nose. Modern sherry profile, ripe red fruits are followed by tropical nuances. Very pleasant and pleasant but not particularly complex.
    • Taste
      87 87
Less fruity, nutty-spicy, pleasant, slightly bitter oak. Some European oak comes through.
    • Finish
      85 85
Relatively short, spicy and slightly bitter.
