I just found it boring. A little smoke, tart and floral, earthy. Somehow one-dimensional. Hadn't bought any more for a long time after the bowmors. None of the standard Bowmore bottlings retained their taste in the bottle for long, they all became flatter

Slightly thin, but good PLV. The last puddle drew a little. However, I would not continue to buy with the number and buy the 18 for three times the price.

  3. HammerHead scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Based on an old sheet with whisky ratings I stumbled upon. I bought this bottle back in 2008, having only about 15 to 20 different malts under my belt. Scored it 7,5 out of 10 which would translate into circa 84 WB-points. This score should hence be put into the perspective of a relative beginner.

My (pretty elementary) tasting notes were: smoke, honey, lemon and hints of sherry in the nose. A spicy taste with smoke, honey and chocolate stretching into a long, smoky and slightly medicinal finish.

  9. Albaron scored this whisky 81 points Specialist

Very reserved smoke, almost imperceptible. Blind, I think he is an Irishman, because he has these typical green notes in the nose, a total of quite bitter and spicy, little fruit but actually quite delicious
    • Nose
strong spiciness, Maggi, a bit fleshy, somehow pungent, a greenish iris note, a bit of green crop and hay seeds, a touch of cherries, especially from the pulp, very light smoke
    • Taste
decent onset for 40%, light smoke a bit moldy and earthy, spicy, a hint of dates, slightly bitter, like too long-drawn black tea and oak tannins in the transition to the finish
    • Finish
the bitterness remains, oak, very slight smoke billowing through

  10. recursiewhisky scored this whisky 79 points Expert Senior

It is not a complex but soft Islay. Delicious and not that overwhelming.
    • Nose
Soft smell of smoke and peat, slightly medicinal. Sweet raisins with a slight smell of oak. Soft fruity (pear? & Banana) with caramel. After some time the spicy, vanilla and sherry tones come through. A beautiful complex composition.
    • Taste
Sweet and soft salty with a mild smoke and peat taste. Leather, iodine, honey and surprising fruity notes. Has a light and airy mouthfeel. After some time, floral notes and liquorice also come through.
    • Finish
Mild but long aftertaste rich in smoke and medicinal notes. The liquorice will hang nicely.

I do not find the strong yeasty nose very pleasant and the burn bothers me - not a very round dram in my opinion. Despite it being a ~30 EUR entry level, I find it slightly disappointing.
    • Nose
Yeasty (dominant) and malty. Gentle peat, at the end a whiff of citric fruit.
    • Taste
Yeasty scent turns to mango taste, which hits first. Afterwards, peat comes through, along with some unpleasant wet wood or cardboard. Brine towards the end. Alcohol burn is more intense than expected for a 40%.
    • Finish
Peat and salt mostly, but the wet cardboard remains present just below. Short to medium length, leaves a tad of dryness.

Tasted 13/01/2015. It's an ok Bowmore, but it misses something, so it couldn't really convince me.
    • Nose
    • Finish
      Korte finish.

Pleasant, sweet smoky, balanced whisky. Bottle purchased from Tallinn in summer 2013 and tasted in 2013-2015.
    • Nose
Sit, honey, light smoke, hail bitter melange
    • Taste
Dark fruits, peat, slightly heather, light oily mouth
    • Finish
Medium aftertaste with pleasant sweet smell and somewhat like cardamom

hardly any smoke in the aroma; The smoke then develops in the mouth, not too strong, but nevertheless it is there
Hints of violet oil and the floral notes are clearly there
    • Nose
you are on a meadow flooded with seawater
the sun has already evaporated most of the water,
salty residues and small puddles line the meadow with its flowers
there are violets ... you can not see it exactly
sweet tangerines and mild smoked apricots are in the picnic basket
The air that blows from the sea is fresh and clear
You go a little further and discover an old car tire and oil residue
    • Taste
you sit down at the campfire, it crackles
Now and then you have the feeling that a piece of car tire could have gotten into the fire
you enjoy the smoked apricot with a slice of ham
the flowers around you spray their scent,
Sweetish it is just like your tangerine
the fire burns up and a torrent of ashes whirls through the air

I've only had 2 drams out of a 50 ml sample bottle. I've enjoyed these drams, but it ain't complex. All in all a solid dram for when you're not looking for lots of different flavors.

    Note: 82
    • Nose
A little sharp, peppery, lightly peated, sea
    • Taste
Same as the nose, but more salty, peppery and a stronger peat taste. After adding 3 drops of water I could taste a bit more body.
    • Finish
      Short to medium.

A good unpretentious whisky. But without any real hang either.
    • Nose
Smoked, iodized and quite fruity. A typical Islay nose, not unpleasant.
    • Taste
Peat is present. As well as the fruit. But all is very light, without much character.
    • Finish
The final is relatively short, on iodine, smoked and spices.

  33. WillemvdK scored this whisky 79 points Expert Senior

Not bad but something is missing. The whole is a bit stale and little sparkling.
    • Nose
Peat smoke and raisins. The smoke is reasonably sharp in nature. Really smoke, little iodine / medicinal.
    • Taste
Gunpowder, raisins and then ... nothing. Muffy and flat. Raisins and even a bit of chocolate comes to the surface with water.
    • Finish
Nice bitter and a nice smoky taste.

  34. D3US scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

I like Bowmore because it's not overly peaty. It's all a bit more subtle than with most Islay whiskies. I can always enjoy a dram of this.
    • Nose
Peat and smoke obvious, but not in your face. A licorice note here, together with some subtle sweet fruits. Sea-breeze. Malty as well.
    • Taste
A note that reminds me of Fisherman's Friend cough sweets. If I close my eyes I can imagine myself on a cold day sucking on one of those sweets. Some nice sweet fruit, with a warming peat fire in the background.
    • Finish
The cough sweet taste remains, as do the fruits and malt. Vanilla sweetness as well, all go for a medium long finish.

Soft, salty flavors with beautiful undertones of lemon, honey and red fruit which in turn rest on aromas of smoke and peat. A fresh, smoky combination doing to fine
    • Taste
An oily texture with warm, soft flavors of salt, orange and sweet notes of vanilla, honey and caramel in the background burnt oak
    • Finish
Delicious aftertaste of peat and soft tones of salt, cocoa and cinnamon

    • Finish

    very nice indeed.

    SGP: 446
    • Nose
Bandages, crashed aspirin, old medications cabinet; faint sweetness; icing sugar; now vanilla sugar; prunes

(water) more vanilla, smoke, zesty freshness
    • Taste
sweet arrival, nice and balance on the palate; simply yummy; lacks a bit of a punch
    • Finish
      medium long, smoke and sweetness

  42. QuarterCentury scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Bowmore 12yo has a place in many hearts as Islay`s `medium-peated` malt.

A pronounced iodine character with plenty of pepper, yet the malt is

balanced and smooth as well as smoky.

  43. Feusi scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

I rated it with 87 points some years ago, now i'm correcting it to 82. I feel a bit less character in it, let's say some king of watery.
    • Nose
Nice peat and smoke, not to much with some sweet fruity notes.
    • Taste
A spicy sweetness, malt, peat and a bit smoky. Some bitter notes are disturbing on the palate.
    • Finish
A medium finish, with the peaty and sweet notes.

  44. alectron scored this whisky 79 points Connoisseur

This was hidden in a blind tasting line up and did surprisingly well. Maybe just batch variations ? I had this on other times where I rated it a bit lower (74-78), so the rating given on the base is combined scores.
    • Nose
      sawdust 4, peat/smoke 3, vegetables/green plant material 3, cardboard 3, caramel 2, mandarine 2, buttery 2, ash 2, mandarines 1. (82)
    • Taste
      moke 4, wood 3, vanilla 3, salt 2, cardboard 2 (82)

Later: cardboardy wood seems to become more prominent (79)
    • Finish
long-ish but small tail. Vanilla'd ginger 3, sand-y 3, peat smoke 4 and wood 2 comes back at the end. (81)

  45. hsmithjr scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Smoky and peaty.  Floral, with notes of heather.  Orange blossoms. Cut straw.
    • Taste
Smoke and brine.  More perfume, but it is entangled with the peat smoke.  Sweet and well rounded.
    • Finish
Long and smoky.  Salty sea grass.  Lemon curd.

  48. CrilleVBG scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

A good whisky. But I want more attack on the palette.
    • Nose
Fresh notes of lemon hits me here. And some yeast comes flying. The peat is the Bowmore standard.. Plus a sour scent...
    • Taste
The lemon comes again, together with a peppery note. Now the peat really comes. Nice..
    • Finish
The finish is medium long. And now its all peaty. Me like a lot.

  49. Roel scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Very nice standard bottling. Would be even better with higher ABV. 85 points (was 84 previously).
    • Nose
Clean nose with yeasty (Sauerteig) and farmy impression (doggy style) present at first. Soon the peat smoke takes the form of Bonito stock, some grainy influences (sausages) as well as sherry (or oranges?) and oriental fruity notes.
    • Taste
Now things are really moving: very maritime, very bold, fishy peat, but not overly present. Nice, gentle fruitiness, some vanilla too.
    • Finish
Long dry and winey finish on cherry notes. Good.

  50. Maltm8 scored this whisky 82 points Member Senior

Good balance of oak and peat smoke. A bit light And short for a peaty whisky. Good vanilla in the nose
