Lots of sherry, but not overpowered, despite the colour. Actually quite nice. Needs heat, without it it's as flat as Twiggy. Of course, the barrel does not allow any conclusions about the distillery character, the alcohol development suggests juvenile spirit, the amount of wood an octave or a similar crutch.

    Notes from a blind tasting.

OK, much older than expected. Otherwise as expected, everything can be.

Contrary to the expectations aroused by the colour, the nose is initially absolutely dry. Wood and nothing else, altogether quite shy. Barrel acid, prunes in the background. After a while it opens up a bit, now there is a dark caramel sweetness and the plums are a bit more intense. Movement brings something old basement. Warmth helps, at first the tap acid is quite acute, which now rises out of the glass, then tobacco, later beet syrup.

A little sweeter in the mouth, which I find difficult to characterize. Basically, I could also go with the prunes, with a clearly sour side note. The alcohol is very hesitant, but then quite strong, or rough. A little more sweetness in the second sip, fir honey, but still subtle. The acid is less prominent now.
    • Finish
      83 83
Surprisingly, the finish is rather short and initially acidic before a sweet strength note remains. He warms up nicely. Logically less acid in the second sip. Keep it short though.

    I really liked the device.
    • Nose
      Cola. Brutally dark.

Starts out sourly woody. I find the wood to be dry, but still fresh. Tart leather, blackberries and musty hay. Develops more and more meaty. Sweet paprika spice and has a touch of sauerbraten sauce.
With a little time in the glass, the colleague develops more and more into gravy. Dark cherries and juniper berries inside. The alcohol occasionally punches through and brings something fresh floral with it.
With an even longer service life, filter coffee and dark chocolate will also prevail. Also looks a lot dirtier now. I like it…
    • Taste
Full, soft acceleration. Slightly sweet even. Then comes ne properly spicy leg. Again the meat from the roast. Then pepper and ne tart herbal mixture.
Mustier on the second sip. Even dirty sandy, gritty. The alcohol pushes along properly.
But I also find the dark cherries and the sour blackberries in the taste. Plus malty and some yeast. The taste is more in the direction of espresso bitterness and cocoa. Slightly dirty and aggressive. Very beautiful …
    • Finish
Medium to long. First disappears and then rolls up the field again from behind. Sweet dried fruit, espresso and a load of spice.

The color raises expectations that the taste doesn’t fulfill.
Nosing quite silent, some sherry and herbal notes and of course the alk!
Taste sharp and metallic, with notes of chocolate and raisins, but a little bitter.
Finish alkoholic metallic and for me quite short.

Sorry but it should be more and better for a 100€ cask strenght even in these times.

  6. Greenkeeper scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

My first normal rating was a "89" which I rarely give. I was really enthusiastic.
The 2nd rating now was only a "81" which is still gracious. Could have been even worse. I'm quite shocked with that big difference. Never experienced such a big difference to the bad side in the last decade with any other whisky.

The reason is, that this expression changes a lot after opening the bottle, due to a lower fill level and oxidation.

Many whiskies, epecially those that are "sharp" oder "too spicy" with a fresh opened bottle tend to mellow down with more and more oxygen in the bottle doing its work and they get better.

With this expression, it's the opposite. After savouring half of the bottle I let the whisky stand in the shelf for a month or so before doing a 2nd tasting.

After that time all the wonderful herbs and coffee impressions had disappeared or lets say changed to worn-out dry herbs with only a little rest of aroma and instead there were some really unpleasant salty notes, moist cardboard and some barley-bitterness.

What a dramtic loss of good taste !

First I thought I just had a bad whisky day and tried it once more two days later and again four days later, but the disappointment stayed the same.

I wanted to buy another bottle after the first tasting, but now I struck this expression from my wishlist.

For best enjoyment you need to fill the bottle in many smaller tasting bottles to keep the oxygen away or be really fast with emptying it.
