This is an unpeated sherried Islay scotch with a craft presentation and lots of brine. Soon after opening the bottle, the nose is at a good volume level – not shy at all. Immediate sweetness. Sweet-salty sherried malt with some chocolate notes (Hershey’s syrup) and a sourness that evens out over time. A bit of alcohol smell at first, but this dissipates over time. On the palate, a good amount of flavor: a rich and slightly salty sherried malt. Very malty with a medium-sweet, caramel-type sweetness. But it’s not too sweet and it doesn’t strike me as too young. There’s a good complexity and sequence of flavors over time. Something nutty. Then surprisingly juicy on the palate. The fruit juiciness seems to come in after a second or two. Perhaps apple/grape juice – very fresh for a moment. Then a clear taste of oak wood surfaces. Salted leather on the finish. Finish is medium-long, with the brine lingering. This is very nice, especially given the bottle was just opened. My mind compares the salty, sherried style to Springbank 15 and Bowmore 15, but without the peat. So far, I like the Bowmore better … but this has nice complexity and a nice masculine character. Not rough/harsh or biting but muscular, leathery, and salty … like the weathered sea captain on the label. The craft presentation really lifted this 12-year-old. It is mature for its age. As the open bottle develops, it gets more integrated … a classic sherried malt with brine, salted caramel, chocolate and a sweet juiciness. The freshness becomes more pervasive, but so does the brine. Tasting on the next day: The nose begins with a vibrant, pleasantly Strathisla-esque grassiness. This settles down to a sherried malt with cereal and and a hint of lemon. Palate is a strong hit of good quality sherried malt and intense brine – again, it reminds me of Bowmore 15 without the peat. This is a lot of Scotch for the really low price.
