Sorry, but why on earth should you buy this when there's the regular 12-year-old to be had at the same (or even at a lower) price? This is just younger, that's its only differentiating characteristic.
    • Nose
      80 80
Yeah, but no. I mean, if you're into young, not-even-into-their-teens-yet peaters, you might dig this nose, but when there's older and better stuff (or quality NAS like the Laphroaig Quarter Cask) out there for the same price, why would you buy this?
    • Taste
      82 82
Yup, a tasty, lush-and-sweet (and young) CI. Simple, straightforward and tasty. Oysters, lemon juice, salt.
    • Finish

See above. Nice enough, no complaints (except the price).

Second try after half a year, with my scoring system reformed. Tasted at the distillery.

Heavily peated nose but delicate palate. A good balance between fruits and peat. Watery yet still quaffable.

    81-85 - Another dram welcomed

Lots of lemon and a subtle floral note. For a Coal Ila "only" subtly smoky. Unfortunately very one-dimensional, in addition a few percent more volume would do him good.

  7. hafssol scored this whisky 78 points Expert Junior

Despite its younger age, this NAS offers a quite balanced version of a peaty malt. Some fresh herbal and citrus notes are clear from the nose, alongside a breezy touch of saltiness, that makes the peat not so heavy nor earthy as one could expect.

The smoky profile is not overwhelming while the alcohol bites a bit, even if the abv is only at 43. The opening barbecue fragrancy slowly disappears, at first tinged in fine herbs and citrus but ending up in a not fully pleasant metallic feeling.

It seems like Caol Ila is pushing it on the market lately, for understandable reasons, and also at an affordable price, but while it’s not bad at all, the 12 y.o. still remains a couple of steps above this one.

Sweet peat, a little meaty and savoury, grass, brine, biscuits. Citrus fruits are present on the nose, but less so on the palate. This is a good whisky, very good even, but the standard 12 is better and at a lower price.

    S 6
Let it breathe before nosing or the condensed flavour can bring wrong impressions. The palate is single-layered despite having the peat to add complexity. Not interesting.

[71-77] Worth a try but not a bottle.

    N 23
sticky oil on metal plate upfront but quickly faded away. Citrus fruit, almost apple crumbles like. Saline with an extra pinch of sea salt. A whiff of boiled sweet mixed with peat smoke.

    P 25
Dry & mildly fruity (pineapple). Moderately peated. Mild peppery spices to support. Mildly burnt sandalwood smoke.

    F 22
Mid, dry finish. Lightly smoked meat.

Like all Caol Ila, a smooth, smoky representative.

    - quite average Islay single malt
    - rather disappointing for the price, you don't have to
    have again
    - the smoke also really not well integrated and
also tastes more unpleasant than tasty
    - Caol Ila 12 years is cheaper and significantly better
    • Nose
strong smoke onset, strong and clear cold smoke, few secondary aromas, behind that little ... slight sweetness
    • Taste
smoky, salty, seaweed as you know it, young and one-dimensional
    • Finish
      relatively short finish;
      medium-long smoky aftertaste

Our conclusion: The Caol Ila Moch is an excellent whisky and at the same time proof that Islay-Malts can be really good even without age. Smoke, peat, ash and sea salt are finely interwoven to give a whisky that is very enjoyable. Also for beginners highly recommended. For 35 to 40 euros a clear buy recommendation!

C: Sweeter than the 12yo with a mild-yet-determined citrus note. Also, this has more body than the 12yo and a longer form also.

  23. Stanzeflasche scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

An avalanche of coarse salt, iodine, sea spray, kelp. Fresh lemon peel, an ounce of vanilla. Wispy smoke, a very mineral, even metallic side. The shells stuck to the rock. Behind, a little liquid honey.
In the mouth, honey and peat stand out, lemon, white pepper, oyster, butarga, it is slightly acidic. A stony taste on the finish, quite long, sparkling, caramel, peat and coconut milk. It's a very maritime profile, I like it a lot, for a NAS at less than 45 ° it's really extraordinary.

A young average malt - not bad, but not spectacular - also expensive!
    • Nose
      very pleasant smoky note, behind is little ... light sweetness, alcohol;
    • Taste
      beautiful sweetness on arrival, some smoke, a full spice spreads; obviously young, one-dimensional;

relatively short, quickly fading finish! Here you can clearly see the youth.

Young and smoky. Campfire smoke. Some alcoholic freshness.
    • Taste

It's not as good as I remembered it to be, especially on the palate, but still, it's an excellent entry level Islay, and a very good take on the distillery character. In a way it feels more "evident" than the 12, though less impactful, which is why I'll support Toffie76 in saying that it's the perfect dram to make your buddies discover the "clean & easy" side of Islay.
    • Nose
When I first tried it a few years ago, I thought it was excellent ant that its goal to summarize Caol's style was quite achieved. Onto a proper review now ... And indeed the nose is really charming and on point. It's everything a young Caol should have : lemon, green olives, seaweed and fresh white bread, period. The rest is accessory : some kind of vinegary bruschetta, green pepper, rosemary-flavoured olive oil ... Very coherent, very Caol. The few points it looses in simplicity, it gains back in obviousness (which is always something that scores in my book). Smoked salt. If you wait, some more subtle touches arise : wet newspapers and dry white wine. Excellent, though not complex.
    • Taste
Much less impactful than I recalled. The texture is ok, nice oiliness, but the taste feels locked under 43%. I rarely complain about strength but here, it clearly seems responsible of some "gustative staticity". Other than that, feels pretty much "at the beach" : licking a pebble stone between two lemon shortbreads, with some brine in your nose.
    • Finish
Better already ! A feeling of SevenUp upon swallowing, then a very nice mineral comeback on limestone and slate, nice austerity again, that's the Caol I like ! Chlorine and Schweppes Tonic. Not that short actually, and better focused than the palate.

Very slow tears, the whisky sticks on the glass. Light sweet, peaty and creamy nose. Little medicinal at the end. Not overwhelming but a nice balanced and pleasant nose.
    • Taste
Nice and sweet coming in. Peat and smoke. More oily in taste than the cream in the nose. Spicy at the end; pepper.
    • Finish
Medium finish. Hot for a while with a mix of bitterness and brine in the end.

Nice dram, mix of peat with sweet / caramel. The fruity and fresh from the smell does not really come back in the taste.
    • Nose
Peat, slightly smoky, leather. Fresh, citrus, vanilla. Hay. Salty
    • Taste
Slightly salmiak in the beginning, peat, smoke, slightly tingling. Learn. Toffee, caramel.
    • Finish
      Fairly short, peat, caramel.

The smell is good, the taste is so appetizing, the taste is so scattered. Damn, somehow I was hoping that this would be good and given the low price it would be a great investment, so nothing ..
    • Nose
Citrus, vanilla, woody, waxed fruits (peaches, apricots), easy to feel sour cream and cool mint
    • Taste
Milk chocolate, bitter-sour taste, peat, gum, lemon, quite pronounced spices. It's so fresh and light over the peat, but those bitter-sour tones do not fit me.

Nose: smoke, more phenolic and in my opinion a bit different than the 12er. As soon as the smoke settles, the citrus presses through Taste: Again smoke and citrus, where is the oak? Finish: Thanks to its 43% Vol. But rather medium and strong Conclusion: A rather one-dimensional Caol Ila with really only a subtle touch of oak. Who loves this will be well served here. The Moch can not deny his youth, he shows this metallic youth recognizable in the departure, but not too problematic thanks to the smoke A Sinlge Malt whose price is performance io, yet he can not keep up with his older brother the 12er.

Moch is a fun young addition to the Caol Ila family. The name comes from the Gaelic and stands for 'dawn'. Excellent combination of a "peated" whisky with a young, warm, soft spiciness.
    • Nose
Bright, creamy and fresh with tones of the wet, salty sand after the tide has withdrawn. Aromas of lemon peel and ginger lemonade. Then some smoky tones (old bonfire).
    • Taste
Sweet malty and salty tones with a balanced acidity and fresh notes of a sea breeze. Then the familiar smoky tones. A soft and full whisky.
    • Finish
Warm in the throat and remains medium long. Sweet malty tones, then smoky and salty tones. A beautiful whole.

Young and powerful Caol Ila. Smells nice of smoke, campfire and bacon. Tasty then next to the smoke also some sweetness and lemon notes. Overall, quite strong and spicy, especially the aftertaste.

  61. Albaron scored this whisky 80 points Specialist

The phenolic smoke points back to Islay's south coast. Since there is no cask strength, at least I can not imagine that, I'm typing on an Ardbeg TEN. The mildness would also fit. Good to drink, very uncomplicated, but also a bit boring.

Blind tasted as part of an advent calendar action.
    • Nose
phenolic smoke, some alcohol, malt, vanilla, some cereals and menthol, as well as some citrus
    • Taste
Sweet, vanilla, slightly malty and of course smoke. Some citrus also comes through. The alcohol from the nose is not so noticeable here, but rather restrained

Citrus and menthol remain something, then are replaced by an oak and of course the smoke. Overall, but quite short

Nose: Citrus notes among coastal maritime notes of sea spray, fruit and gentle smoke.

Palate: Sweet entry, than a wave of smoke comes in! smoked bacon, a bit of rubber, peat, and malty-sweet cereals.

Finish : Medium on smoke, cereals and malt.

    Bottom line

lighter and less aggressive than the 12, yet round and nice! A lovely entry point people getting acquainted with Islay malts, and a very drinkable Islay, with a lot of smoke, but lighter on the rubber medicinal notes.

Water is good for the taste, not for the nose. 12 yo is better.

Water - rubbery smoke. Ash. Citrus hint. Boiled beans.
    • Taste
Neat - short, sweet arrival. Immediately foolowed by dry ashy smoke. Development from lemon citrus to sweet citrus.
Water - sweet arrival. Development of fruity sweetness, apples and bananas.
    • Finish
Neat - sweet citrus, and smokey dryness.
Water - orange citrus, smoke. Long and dry.

It's all medium, nod bad, nod very good but okay.

The problem for me with this one is that it does not speak to me. Everytime I see the bottle I wonder what it tasted like exactly? While with the standard 12yr I can remember it vividly. It doesn't make any impression on me.

I have to say, the more the botle got empty, the better it got. Less power punch, more sweetish and easy. I would advise not more than 2-4 drops of watter and let is rest a while before you stick your nose in it.

I give it a deserved 82 but that's based on the end of the bottle...

I prefer the standard 12yo above the Moch for sure!

Cow stable peat style. Lemon and vanilla. Very nice nose, gentle and warm, but clean and fresh at the same time.

Salty arival, turns sweeter. Thin Mouthfeel, but enough flavour with an ashy overlay.

Pepper and ash in the finish.

Obviously still quite young and therefore not very complex, but already good drinkable. I like it better than the 12 year old Caol Ila.
    • Nose
First, peat smoke, slightly medicated, but not very dominant. Malty, yeasty, then sweet, slightly vanilla. Fresh and young.
    • Taste
Smoky-dry (less than the 12-year-old), vanilla and honey sweetness, then woody and spicy notes. Something salty. Oily, medium-bodied.
    • Finish
Medium long, slightly smoky-dry and metallic; a bit bitter at the end.

    Indeed more
accessible than the 12 Year Old. Softer and sweeter. If I were an Ileach, this
would be my breakfast whisky. Ah, the dawn indeed. Thanks, Pat. Around 30 EUR,
    which is very fair indeed.
    • Nose
      Very fresh and young
nose on limoncello and lemon pie with some vanilla. Hay and even a mild stable
scent. Make that manure, although that sounds a lot worse than it smells. Turns
wonderfully sweet and creamy with a smoky accent. But fresh and lively. Not
peat in your face, far from it.
    • Taste
      The arrival is pretty
soft with again that reticent smokiness. Some ashes and a lot of saltiness
before the yellow fruit kicks in. It is even a bit candied now. Becomes sweeter
all the time. Hint of espresso, but hidden beneath the fruit. Nice balance,
      despite its simplicity.
    • Finish
      In the finish, the
peat and the salt again take the reins.

One of the best whiskies in this price category. More complex and more fruity than the standard 12-year-old. At the same price, this one is the better choice in my opinion.
    • Nose
Creamy vanilla, lime, peat, peach, caramel, raspberry and hay.
    • Taste
Citrus, peat ash, caramel, vanilla, salt and espresso.
    • Finish
Peat ash, caramel, vanilla, dark chocolate and lime.

    • Nose
Refreshing aromas of honey, cream and notes of wet grass and hay. Aromas of biscuit, lemon and light smoke are also to be found also.
    • Taste
In the mouth Caol Ila Moch warm and soft taste of peat, spices, caramel and honey.
    • Finish
The finish is long and smoky.

Moch is Gaelic for "dawn", a feeling that this whisky certainly evokes
in us with his light, airy but warm flavors and aromas. Colour : Light gold

Smell : Salty, smoky and soft fruit

Taste : Sweet, peaty and smoky aftertaste

    • Finish

Fairy, a good bit of Islay. Stylishly similar whiskys are, for example, Bunnahabhain Cruach-Mhona, Compass Box Peat Monster, or BenRiach 12th Herodotus Fumosus.
    • Nose
Typically a representative sweeps peat whisky. Straw, citrus, grape skins, peat. The smell is distinctive, a little varnish. (84 b)
    • Taste
Sweet, smoky, medium-sweet taste. Citrus peat, a smoky, smoky, slowly drying-up, eventually ashes. (84 b)

"Taking its name from the Gaelic for `dawn’, Moch is
a wonderful newcomer from Caol Ila and is a must-try for fans of this

expression, Moch is a fantastic easy-drinking dram."

    • Nose
Oilish, vague hints of wood and peat. A soft sweetness with a tiny hint of vanilla
    • Taste
A soft sweet entry followed by spices with slight peat. The spices grows and stays after the peatiness have dissapeared.
    • Finish
Rather long finish but with a tendency to stay in the mouth rather than follow down the throat.
