Whisky Reviews for Glendronach 1996
6 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.75 points
- This must have been a very reactive cask, the whisky is young, but it was high time to bottle it. I am not entirely convinced by this one.
Deep sherry notes so typical for Glendronach with raisins, prunes, stewed dates, tons of toffee, milk chocolate. On top there are some grilled chestnuts and some slight maritime influence (mussels). Excellent balance.
Nice and sweet but with some rough edges. Very fruity, orange, strawberry, blackberry, raisins, prunes, espresso to compensate the sweetness, coffee beans, but also tons of spices with pepper and chilli mostly. It's quite tannic and drying.
Rather short, quite spicy and tannic with chilli and pepper showing up again.
- Batch 3 contains the following bottles:
1989 cask 3833
1990 cask 3059
1990 cask 3068
1991 cask 2512
1996 cask 202
Dried plums, coffee, lacquer, cherry cherry, sherry, licorice, cinnamon. Some ingredients appear only after dilution with water, then the smell is more velvety and more varied. The overall impression is very dense, strong and warm. (91 b)
Without water I came to taste so dense and strong, bitter-chocolate that I pass on thinning. Even after dilution with water (when drops can be added more than ten, rather than individually), it is still strong and graceful. A lot of wood, pepper, dried plums, the strongest dark chocolate. But slight gladness will also appear. There is a lot of tanned wood in the flavor. (89 b)
Perfectly balanced Oloroso sherry cask whisky. At first it gives a very strong note of leather, a mix of prune sweetness, plums, cherry and watermelon, old oak cabinets, fingernail polish with no acetone notes, grinded coffee, old motorcycle leather seat, delicate roots and a lot of dark chocolate.
It starts with huge sweetness and a little bit of sourness. Here comes strong dark chocolate in extensive volume, a few moments later your sense coffee, leather and roots, sweetness again and some bitterness, bitter grapefruit, grilled chili, white pepper, dryness, prunes, dried cherry and honey.
Very long with hints of prunes, dried fruits, coffee, leather and metallic notes in the aftertaste.
