    Colour:
    Light gold
    Nose:
Salty, spicy and accompanied by aromas of yellow apple peel. In addition limes, soft lemon juice, some grapefruit and these incomparable maritime components - gentle peat flavors, smoke and vanilla end in seaweed with algae in the ship harbor - very straightforward and good.
    Taste:
Lying softly and salty on the tongue - then turning up and becoming more powerful. Maritime and enriched with fruity notes of lime, grapefruit and bergamot as well as with suitably moist coal, peat and cardboard. The vanilla bean complements this harmonious combination - great.
    Finish:
Long - very straightforward and maritime. The phenols are subordinate to the fruit content and without major fluctuations everything is as if from a single source - overall really good.
    Comment:
The taste runs with 92+ points and the finish with 92-.

From nose to palate, a very clean and simply excellent Port Ellen. Loved it.
    • Nose
Coastal (seaweeds, seashells), mineral, lemony and zesty, tarry, slightly medicinal and quite farmy too.
    • Taste
Punchy and sharp. Peat, lemon and lime juice, salt and pepper.
With water, the nose is more tarry, citrusy (hints of grapefruits) and smoky. The palate is even more juicy.
    • Finish
      Long, peat, lemon and pepper.

    • Nose
A mash of apricot and banana. Floral as well. A wax coat. Apple, honey, peat, vanilla, tangerine, lemon and porridge.
    • Taste
More honey, beeswax even, which didn't occur to me in the nose at all. Pepper, peat and salt. Apple and leather.
    • Finish
      Cocoa, peat, honey and apple.

Tasted by Serge / Whiskyfun in January 2011:

    Port Ellen 27 yo 1982/2010
    (55.5%, Old Bothwell, cask #2558)

    Colour: straw.

Nose: yahowow! It’s one of these crystal-clean, extremely
zesty Port Ellens, and this one is maybe even cleaner than the cleanest PEs I
could try so far. Little tar and little coal, rather bags of seaweed, lime and
peat (smoke), then whiffs of barnyard and loads of apple peelings. It’s even a
little camphory ala Laphroaig. Superb! With water: candle wax and coal smoke
plus oceans of tar and shoe polish this time. This baby reminds me a bit of the
two 1978s Rare Malts, even if it becomes a tad cardboardy afrer a moment, which
    was unexpected.

Mouth (neat): yodlayeedleeyah! (that’s no official tasting
vocabulary, in case you didn’t notice). ‘Green’ raw peat, lemon and lime, green
tea, grass, grapefruits… Extremely zesty and ‘sharp like a blade’, as they say.
The purity of crystal, with just a little rubber in the background, as often
    with PE in my opinion.

With water: perfection made whisky. Textbook raw Port
Ellen – and it’s even drinkable, imagine! Finish: very long, with a lingering
peat (but why is peat always lingering in tasting notes?)

    Comments: I think we
should go burgle Old Bothwell’s. RU game? Not all are great in my opinion but
this one was fab. SGP:368 – 92 points.

    WITH WATER

Nose - Tar, peat, burning coal, lemone zest, melted butter, something flowery

Palate - Peat still at the front, wood varnish, still lemony

    Finish - very very long

This is good for sure but a little one dimensional for me profile wise. Peat heads will love this. A quality port Ellen.
    • Nose
Sweet honey, vanilla, marzipan, lemon, cashew nuts?
    • Taste
Crisp, sharp. peat up front, lemon in the aftertaste. marzipan again.
    • Finish
      Long.
