I recently attended a tasting of three Alriks: Sancta Brigitta, Hekate, and a Whiskydruid Banyuls barrique. Having spent a few hours comparing them side by side with and without added water, I am slightly at a loss, because while there are no off notes or directly unappealing aromas in them, they are so strongly cask-based that it's hard to get any feel for the actual distillate, and each one has a finish that tastes mostly of the cask and doesn't last, which makes me wonder if the distillate can stand on its own if not drowned in 1st fills and finishes. The difference in the length of the finish and non-cask tastes when compared for example to a strongly sherried young Caol Ila (Signatory cask 316648) is strikingly in favor of that Caol Ila (87 pts.).

When all people present in the tasting were polled, this one earned the last spot among the Alriks, and commentary on it was rather negative.
    • Nose
Buttery and herbal at first, then strong young wood notes like Ikea furniture. Peppermint, and sharpness on account of the ABV. Some dessert wine pushes through with water, and vanilla, herbs, and tree sap.
    • Taste
Oddly stinging on the tongue, and pine-y, like raki or ouzo or some other less usual booze (someone mentioned Unicum). A sweet port-like wine note and uhh.. a bit of toothpaste? Quite peppery and fresh, and with water, very spicy. Wood, wood, wood, and perhaps some warm sawblades.
    • Finish
      Not much happening here.

Delicate sweet wine character with very nicely integrated Alrik smoke. In terms of taste, one remembers the 2011 Elsburn Banyuls, but with a much more complex overall picture and of course spicy-smoky notes.

A good malt, yes. Significantly less smoke in the midst of many tested Alriks. Some other Alriks (OA) liked me more. I see strengths in the nose here, then he breaks something down bit by bit. In this respect, in my opinion, also a sporty price. But he will find his fans.

Wow, I don't notice anything of the 62.9% at first. Even the smoke can only be guessed at, a distant campfire - my wife says the day after the Easter fire - in a positive way.
Sweet oranges, bergamot, violets? A touch of bygone Bowmore ...
Apricot jam on buttered raisin dumplings. Sweet and sour fruit salad.
With water a little more floral and "perfumed" - echoes of an artificial Don Papa "rum".

There are the percentages all at once. Powerful start with a little chilli catch. I'll treat myself to some water. But quite tart aromas and intense spices mix to create a fruity bouquet. These lead to a drought that takes command. The campfire burns far away. Prunes. Something meaty and sour a la Mortlach.

It gradually sounds sour and fruity. The intensity is medium here, but it lasts a little. Overall, however, a little less than expected
