My bottle has the bottle code LKE 028573. As in the photo here, it has the gold rim (double at the bottom) and the same label text.

I won this bottle in an auction at Krüger for only 17 euros. Based on the tax stamp, I estimate my bottle dates from the late 80s, early to mid-90s.
    • Nose
      88 88
The nose is typical for these old VAT 69s. Slightly smoky, it reminds me of Lagavulin, White Horse or Talisker.
The grain is much less noticeable than in other blends of this era.
This VAT 69 is less floral or vanilla-like than other blends.

Malt, earth, apple juice and pure peat smoke, rather crystalline.
The 40% are sufficiently voluminous and dense.
    • Taste
      87 87
      86.5
Sweet fruit, with a bit more grain and vanilla; the peat is salty and full of barley.
It's simple, but refined and clean.

I can taste a lot of distillate – according to internet research, up to 40 different distilleries were included in VAT 69 at that time, especially North British as the main component (grain) and Glen Garioch (malt). Of course, I can't identify individual components, but a clean whisky distillate is always the dominant flavor.
    • Finish
      87 87
      87.5
The mouthfeel isn't thin, but it's also not dense or thick. It's sufficiently voluminous and somewhat industrial, like something from a factory, with a slightly dirty quality.
In the end, sweetness takes over.

The finish is medium-long and even somewhat complex. What more could you expect from such a simple blend in this price range?
