    0383-BRUICHLADDICH PORT CHARLOTTE ISLAY BARLEY 2011 50%
...there's no point in summing it up. I wasn't disappointed. Everything I had hoped for at the outset was delivered. Once again, BRUCHLADDICH demonstrated its class. A rather complex offering, it slowly unfolds and reveals layers of aromas and flavors. For me, it's a taster's paradise. I've written before: I was asked what bottle I would take to a desert island. I replied, maybe not a specific one, but it would be from the Bruchladdich distillery.
    • Nose
...sweet peat smoke, a light citrus whiff. The first whiff makes me want to take a sip. From behind this smoke emerges a lot of fruity sweetness in the form of apples, citrus ingredients, lemongrass, orange slices. It's good, even very good—I like it. In an empty one, fruity sweetness doesn't exist, a car first aid kit: stale bandages, some strange-smelling ointment, crushed pills, etc. It smells faintly of medicine. A bit of a coastal, sea-lake vibe. I return to the full strength—50% maltiness lightly caresses the nostrils. Caramel saltiness appears, graduation towers, everything shrouded in this smoke. It approaches and recedes, evolves, appears and disappears, a drop of honey and a slice of apple.
    • Taste
...for a first taste, it's...a wonderful taste, sweetish, almondy, and smoky, but not overdone. Citrusy with a generous amount of warming spices. The second infusion - sweet again, but an oaky bitterness appears (probably oaky!?), sliced apples with cinnamon, ready for an apple pie. The third attempt -...wow...now there's fire, a campfire fire, smoke, and embers. Baked apple on a stick. "Bruchladiśka" slowly develops over time, what was there at the beginning gives way to what was withdrawn, and vice versa. It warms pleasantly, burning something like herbal pepper, because it's not spicy, rather subdued. It's still sweet/salty...
    • Finish
...lingering, winey/sour, distinctly salty, then it all veers into a seaside atmosphere, green algae, sushi, and fish sauce. It ends—if it does end at all—with a bitter aftertaste.

Bruichladdich sits a little uncomfortably with me. On the one hand Port Charlotte is fast becoming my favourite heavily peated single malt, on the other hand they are one of the most guilty distilleries for charging outrageous prices for young whiskies. This Islay Barley, however, is one of the few fairly priced Port Charlottes and it is delicious. The nose has this wonderful blend of synthetic peach, sherbert, faint citrus, gentle florals and a wonderful BBQ smokiness. I could even be convinced of the fresh linen aromas mentioned on the official website. The palate is nicely mouth coating and largely follows the nose. More peachy-citrusy tang followed by delicious herbals and a lingering smokiness. More affordable options like this and less overpriced gimmicky "explorations" please Port Charlotte!
