The label says this is the "unhurried dram." That may be so, but it also surprisingly unsherried…. The alcohol strength is noticeable in a way that is not present in all cask-strength whiskies that I’ve had. I am left to guess that this harshness is due to young spirit, but interestingly, the latter part of the finish seemed to be the highlight of this whisky so that would argue against just young spirit. Maybe less active casks. In modern times it seems that cask-strength offerings have more fanfare and elan than this one, and I’ve taken marks off as this dram’s alcohol strength has not made up for its relative simplicity. It’s not anything I feel the need to revisit in the future, and this could be said for Glengoyne in general for a while. I’ll take the Glen Grant 15-year Batch Strength over this, even with it’s supposed “heat.” This would be perfect for a "winter dram" with the addition of currants, raisins, candied peels...if it weren't for the price.

Honey and alcohol burn. Vitamin-y but not sulfurous. With a LOT of water, it becomes sweeter with general fruit notes, but not much more interesting.

This is the downfall of this dram. There’s less mouthfeel than I would expect, and just unrelenting prickly heat and oaky bitterness. It’s spicy and metallic, but not in a characterful way; it’s something that you feel you must “endure.” With much water, it becomes sweeter but the alcohol heat still overpowers any discernible underlying notes. After an entire bottle, I still couldn’t find the correct water balance. Shame that.

Honey again. Initial sourness turning bitter and astringent. But then, miraculously, some minutes later there are wafts of raisins, sherry, chocolate, and cream. A minor saving grace.
