Many Shiraz casks give it cinnamon notes.

Please look at the description by markjedi1 which I think is pretty accurate. The whisky matured in Australian red wine casks, which are the counterpart to French sherry casks, but are not allowed to be called sherry there.
For me, the red wine barrels and cinnamon notes dominate. The light youth cannot suppress the very active maturation. I wouldn't dilute it because then he gains spiciness where before he had more ginger.
Considering some offers around €60, the whisky is reasonably priced and unfairly under-rated. I give the whisky 87 points for taste and an extra point for price (on sale). I bought two more bottles of the whisky because it was drunk at two tastings. There he was very well received - mainly by beginners and red wine drinkers.

    Strong
The Fortis expression is a young malt from Starward that matured in both American bourbon casks and red wine barrels. In this it differs greatly from both the Left-Field and the popular Nova. But I don't know if those red wine barrels come from France or from Australia. This core-range expression is bottled at a slightly higher alcohol percentage, i.e. 50%. It can be found at about 70 EUR in Belgium.
Sweet and sour nose with clear wine influences which translates to cherries, dry wood and sourdough bread. Feisty on paprika powder and oregano with something fresh like eucalyptus. After a few minutes of breathing, it becomes slightly sweeter and some more red fruit appears, while the herbs retreat a bit.
It has a great body. High viscosity. Thick fluidity, as we call it. Immediately sweet, even some Jelly Beans, before the herbs make themselves heard. Something earthy like autumn leaves and mushrooms, supported by dark bread and cloves.
Cinnamon on the deathbed. The finish is quite long, thanks (or is that 'due') to the combination of young age and higher alcohol percentage.
This is a strong release from Down Under. Reminds me of those first bottles I brought over at the time, but with a firmer spiciness. Good stuff!

Odor: German Maggienote, light bourbon, squashed apple, indicating depth, well-integrated alcohol, blackberry jam, bitter almond

Taste: fine wood notes, again the Maggie without the sweetness, alcohol is definitely good, but is well integrated, fine sweetness, powdered sugar, nice balance,

Color: bronze tone, clear, narrow WR,

Conclusion: German. more serious and intense than his brother in drinking strength, and for me German. better than the sum of the current base ratings ...

    Aroma oak, vanilla, raisins, delicious

Taste oily, sweetish, vanilla, a little sharpness, chocolate

    Finish long, oily, raisins, spicy

  19. Thermidor scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

My first Starward is a slight disappointment, in that it is a nice tasting whisky, but I can't tell almost anything about the distillate because it's so heavily dominated by secondary aromas.
    • Nose
Wine and licorice, sweet and candied. After a moment, a spicy side emerges. A whiff of perfume, dry wood, and eucalyptus. With water, spices, young tannins, rye flour, sourbread. I could never tell the distillery by the smell, so heavy are the aromas from the casks.
    • Taste
Spices and eucalyptus at first, then a mushroom-like note that's more familiar to me from port-casked whisky. Sticky, viscous, sweet, and dominated by these jelly candy tastes that are in vogue in the whisky world right now. Are these supposed to replace the elegant tropical fruit of yore? If yes, they are a poor substitute.
    • Finish
      Candied, spicy, faintly oily.

    STFH#13
    Mistaken for a bourbon.
    • Nose
Orange, forest fruits - strawberries, nougat, charcoal and gravy.
    • Taste
Sweet with drying oak tones, ginger, umami, spices, vanilla and rooibos.
    • Finish
Medium drying with corn, iron and tobacco leaves.

    • Finish

The sweetness remains, mild, raisin, oak, medium length

    unfortunately disappointing ...
    whisky atypical for me
    • Nose
Red wine, oregano, sweet, reminds me of a cheap bourbon on the nose
    • Taste
inharmonious, alcohol kills you ..., very sweet, red wine, astringent, like tannins.
    • Finish
      soft, not very noticeable
