  1. Totoro scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Very barrel-heavy, very "concentrated", with a wonderful nose. On the palate, I sometimes wish for a few years more and a little less wood so that the fruits come out (even) better. But that's whining on a high level.

First impression: nice, rich, tart oak (compare with the 2020 21er OA from 1st fill bourbon, which is much sweeter, milder, fruity). Also very creamy, you can literally smell the oil and resin that the spirit has dissolved from the American oak planks. Barrel-heavy in a positive sense, although I noticed in comparison that the fruits here are shorter than with the 46% OA. A lot of honey, corn starch, roasted and caramelized popcorn. With longer standing, tart lemons (including peel) and apricots appear and it becomes spicier: the honey becomes forest honey. Very nice, and you can already guess that water could be worth it ...
... And in fact it becomes more elegant, playful, lighter, more floral, and "lighter" with water - but interestingly, not necessarily fruity at all. For me, the fruits are more citrus-based. Still a super ex-bc nose. Scratch the 90.

As expected: intense, full-bodied, with the whole dose of woody spice, tooth-covering sweetness and a jammy, thickened, boiled down or otherwise sugared fruitiness that is reminiscent of canned mandarins etc. Almost a little "too much" or too concentrated without water.
A few drops are highly recommended here: the finish becomes longer and more defined, the oak more creamy, the whole thing a bit more accessible and (in a positive sense) milder. Could - depending on my form on the day - maybe even go to 89.
    • Finish
      88 88
Coconut oil, apricot and bitter orange jam, Schweppes bitter lemon and sweetened corn chips. Sticky and thick.
