At the moment I don't expect anything more from new releases - again and again wet barrel or dead pants at lavish prices. Here I was very positively surprised, elegant, noble, lively, pulsating and with some aroma components felt several years more mature than the label says.
But finally a malt again where my nose won't let go and I still want one.
    • Nose
      91 91
Nuts, wax and green wood, a very oily, thick nose with furniture polish and high-quality shoe polish, beautiful retro furniture and gentleman's room notes with a lot of elegance, then it slowly becomes sweeter, honey, block malt, caramelized breakfast cereals, it becomes ever sweeter and there are also fresh fruit flavors, fresh strawberries, Melon, yellow plums, raisins, dried mango
    • Taste
      90 90
Initially slightly tart with a slight hint of bitter, green wood, wax, herbs, a little dark chocolate, a delicate mineral fresh base tone with a hint of citrus, from the 2nd and 3rd mini sips it only starts - very creamy fruity, dates, mango and dried pineapple, tree sap leather and leaves,
great texture - alcohol strength suits me perfectly - mouthwashing without stinging with a pleasant delicate tingling
    • Finish
      90 90
      medium length

    Great, complex, versatile.
Only the dry finish clouds the overall picture.
    The alcohol is super integrated.

With water: no swimmer and water does him more harm than good.
    • Nose
      92 92
Interesting nose that makes you want more.
The alcohol is well integrated. Mahogany wood notes paired with forest honey, cereals, lots of strawberries and cherries as well as dark chocolate.

With water: Doesn't do him any good in the nose, here he gets very sharp and alcoholic.
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet and fruity at the same time. Much sweeter than the nose, then the alcohol follows. He's getting spicier.

With water: Again rather worse with water. The sweetness decreases, the alcohol sharpness increases.
    • Finish
      83 83
Unfortunately a bit too dry with a medium-long finish. The sweetness disappears completely, only some honey remains. Some lemon.

With water: Bitter and drier with water.

A really nice malt. It not only offers sherry, but also shows its maturity. But without being too boring. There's still life in there.
    • Nose
apricot peel. Juicy pear. Wood-aged apple brandy. sultanas. Hinted at some wax. tree sap. Beautiful forest honey. Warm eggnog Gugelhupf. Some nutmeg. meadow herbs. Older, slightly rotten wood.
    • Taste
More woody and acidic than you would expect from the nose. But that is not meant negatively. More yellow fruity again, but with a few dashes of citrus fruit. Tart honey. The wood brings a pleasant spiciness that tingles and stimulates the flow of saliva. Towards the end, the mouthfeel is slightly vinous.
    • Finish
Nuts. Black tea with milk. grape seeds. oak seasoning.

Very complex and seemingly infinite nose that captivates you to the glass, entertaining on the palate with an alcoholic sharpness that initially overused, but which you get used to in the further course, astringent in the finish - 18.09.2021
    • Nose
      90 90
After about 30 minutes. in the glass, the first impression is confusing and blurry at first. The first recognizable aromas are in the direction of chocolate-coated nuts and waxed wood, the fruit aromas are very intense, sometimes syrupy, juicy pear, apricot compote, candied apple, chocolate banana, brown sugar, occasionally grassy, hay, fir, liquorice, resin
    • Taste
      89 89
The 1st sip cools, is bitter, hot and spicy, the 2nd is far better, much more balanced with fruity-aromatic finesse and multi-layered spiciness. Milk chocolate rounds off the construct, oily, dried fruits, honey, resin
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium length, sweet and sour, wine gum, white pepper, little wood depth but very dry

  13. DocF scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Got a good sherry and more barrel flavor. The sherry is not sulphurous and seems to be of the older variety (walnuts), and I also understand for the first time what "meaty" can be without referring to sulfur. So also more grapes and barrel than malt, but not as bad as in the following release (more grapes, and younger-looking sherry). It is so clear to me.

Nice spicy malt with noticeably long contact with wood.
    I like the nose best.
    • Nose
      89 89
Nuts, spicy wood, a pleasant sweetness are hidden in the background. In any case, it takes a lot of time, the aromas only reveal themselves gradually once you have 'worked your way through' this spicy, woody wall. Sweet apples, vanilla, spices and dry chocolate follow. Likewise dry, almost dusty wood, some caramel and light tart citrus notes.

After the first sip: endless sweet nuts! Caramel, chocolate, and some wood polish.

The empty glass presents sweet, fresh citrus notes and light herbs.
    • Taste
      87 87
Very spicy with a delicate twist of herbs, followed by tangy, tart citrus fruits with strong, spicy wood.
Maybe a little tangy green apple, but the tart woody notes still predominate.
    • Finish
      87 87
Spicy, light wood, slightly dry and herb-like after a while. Dry chocolate.

    • Nose

    • Taste
intense wood notes, spicy, lots of dried fruits, plums, nuts, herbs, a bit leathery and bitter, becoming creamy. Salivary
    • Finish
spicy woody finish, slightly sweet, lots of dried fruits, plums, long-lasting, nuts, some vanilla, very tasty

Haven't found the perfect setting with water yet. It's too spicy for me without it, and it gets a bit woody with it. Let's see, maybe I can still find the right balance.
    • Nose
      88 88
Very interesting and unique right from the start. A lot of old wood (already a bit "closet wall" in places), definitely refill, and an exciting syrupy light fruit note (in the direction of apricot jam) in combination with massive almond aroma. Reminds me in this aspect of those bright teenage sherry lives by SV from the Unchillfiltered series, which always make you wonder what kind of sherry it was (definitely not Olo or PX). Behind this creamy-sweet-fruity side, a lot of spice rises, it becomes almost meaty-savory, with liquorice, lovage and marjoram. Then I find forest aromas: resin, autumn leaves, fir and spruce maybe. Something leathery and "greasy" also resonates. Great thing, even if it was probably taken out of the barrel at the latest possible moment - it really shouldn't have gotten more wood. Still evolving over time, there's a lot to discover.
[Water is not good for the nose and primarily makes it more woody; I would rather advise against.]
    • Taste
      87 87
Undiluted very spicy-peppery attack, you have to pull yourself together to keep it in your mouth longer, it bites quite well. After that initial "spice spike" has passed, yellow fruity, pastry and creamy flavors follow, and on the finish it also reveals its age, fruit notes flash briefly but remain fleeting and elusive. What I find most striking is this herbaceousness, it goes straight through the spice shelf. Would therefore bet on Glenrothes.
With water it quickly becomes milder and more accessible, but not necessarily more differentiated, which is a shame: the back third has so much potential that I would have liked to have stretched it out a bit by diluting it.
    • Finish
      87 87
Not too long, first tropical fruits for a short time, then almost only spicy, but less woody than the nose would have suggested.

Great aromas pour into the room when pouring. Water doesn't help the whisky.
    • Nose

A complex nose that won't let me go. Each time you smell a different smell in the foreground. Tropical fruits - slightly fermented, wax, pears, spicy honey.
    • Taste
      88 88
Pleasant in the mouth. First creamy, then it develops a bit of spiciness. Again, honey, on the sweet side. Some wet herbs.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium-long, spicy finish. Doesn't make an impression on me.

    nose
Sweet ripe fruits, one approach of my beloved overripe tropical fruits is to smell. Honey is almost oozing from the glass. Very slightly hot, but with otherwise well integrated alcohol, which represents the age appropriately. Oily, slightly salty, almost a trace mineral - somehow the Highlands get through even if it's a Speysider? Subtle sherry aromas are slowly emerging, but the barrel was certainly not very strong here. Raisins, brown sugar, dried plums. The longer it stays, the sweeter it becomes. A nose that knows how to fascinate, complex, multi-layered, extremely tasty! The fact that I keep my bottle seems only a matter of form, only the pepper aromas in my mouth that are often mentioned in the sales notes can make me a bit nervous.

    taste
And it actually occurs a little stronger in the mouth, the alcohol is a little more noticeable, but remains pleasant. Fresh, citrus fruits, grass, spices and, as promised, pepper. Fun and lively, here he behaves a little younger than expected. With the third sip it becomes a little quieter and the fruit and the sweetness come back a little, but remain much more in the background than in the nose. I don't notice much of the sherry barrel, it is now more of a light wood note and a slight bitterness. Leather, old furniture, some tobacco and pipe smoke? In any case, significantly less sweet and also a little less round than on the nose.

    Exit
Here clearly the promised pepper, not burning, but warming and with the aroma of black peppercorns. In addition, slightly bitter wood, leather and a slightly oily layer on the tongue. Now almost no more sweetness. The wood stays there for a long time. Spices of the rather hot kind are also shown. Chilli?

    Conclusion
An extremely changeable painting, in which the nose is absolutely fascinating and there is a second side to be explored while drinking, which is also delicious, albeit different. The bottle stays, I'll be happy to try it more often and try to find more flavors.

N-93, T-89, F-88 for a good 90 points that are strongly driven by the nose.

    Very spicy.

I would have guessed at least 30 years of maturation, if I had to guess its age.

  32. Toto0808 scored this whisky 93 points Expert Senior

Aroma: Impressive, round, flawless, juicy fruits (slightly overripe). Pear, peach, apricot, honey, melted malt sugar, light floral notes, vanilla, ginger, a small pinch of pepper, after a long breath notes of wax.
Taste: Nice mouthfeel with a creamy texture and a peppery appearance, very strong due to the vol.%. Multi-layered taste with various local fruits and honey impressions. Clear, but not dominant wood notes and a nice malt sweetness. Later a spicy heat and fine herbs are added. Everything very harmonious and without missing notes.
Finish: Long with stronger spicy notes of white pepper, chilli and noble sweet paprika and a slightly dry finish with clearer wood notes
