A beautiful, rather naked example of a teenage Bruichladdich, from a very good refill cask. As challenging as this distillate can be in its pure form, the sweetness from the cask balances it nicely.

It’s immediately evident that this refill cask has been a good one, providing 15 years of active maturation, which shows in the density and woody sweetness of the nose. This one will need water to unpack. The overall character is of sweet barley and wood, but there’s a pungent maritime influence with a light sprinkle of fruit on top. Water helps unpack the sweetness of complex caramelised butterscotch, dark cfhocolate and vanilla, with brine, oysters, seaweed and evergreen needles on the maritime side. There’s plenty of eucalyptus in its cool spicy and herbal aspects, whereas the malt is heavy and porridge-y. There’s a gentle waxiness to the texture, and the wood is brilliantly integrated. The signature wet wool note and sulphury weight, which can be in-your-face in the Bere barley releases, feel more integrated here. The fruits are both orchard and tropical in character, but really subtle - almost like the fruitiness of seaweed absolute occasionally used in perfumery. There’s also a floral nuance which is quite beautiful, considering the otherwise robust character.

Medium weight, but pleasantly waxy. Sweet and sour, plus a spicy kick to the development. The maritime notes are much less dominant here than on the nose. The palate is more on the sweet barley and sour fruits, with balanced oak spice running through it. Very interesting, water reveals a gentle peat smoke… I wonder? Dilution also powers up the maritime notes in the mid-palate. The flowers and menthol from the nose are here as well. Loving this load of heavy, oily malt brightened by bright fruit and cool spice, complemented by a pleasant chocolateyness. Excellent texture.

Waxy, sweet, woody in a really good way, medium length. Very full, great texture while it’s there. The delicious dark chocolate note returns in force here with a bit of fresh tobacco and some oak that becomes drier as we progress, really nice.
