Today a BenRiach from 2008 is up for tasting. The whisky comes from the Dimensions series by Duncan Taylor and was bottled at cask strength with 52.3% vol. When it was eleven. The whisky in the glass is yellow-brown and has a medium viscosity.
The high alcohol content invites you to experiment and, depending on the concentration, different facets can be discovered in the whisky. Time in the glass is very good for the BenRiach. Quite interesting and exciting for me.

When you first smell in (undiluted) a sweet and sour fruit note; fresh hay, fresh beech wood, light herbal notes. The alcohol is quite noticeable and the whisky looks younger than expected. I take some marzipan and light sherry flavors, birch water, white currants, apricots and, restrained, some liquorice. The whisky makes a rather closed impression for its eleven years.
After adding water, the BenRiach opens a little and marzipan and sandalwood come to the fore.

When undiluted, it was too strong for me. When reduced to 45% vol., The palate initially shows an oily sweetness and shortly thereafter a strong menthol note. The spiciness fades after a while and oak spice and dark chocolate are added. The acidity of red currants is noticeable and some peach compote and dried apricots.
Overall, the dram leaves me a little perplexed. He has good genes and maybe all you have to do is find the right focus. It is always exciting.
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish of the BenRiach is rather medium to long, with slightly astringent wood notes dominating. The freshness of the mint is retained and the chocolate sweetness spreads. There is a hint of sweet orange jam.
